Ex-NIGHTWISH Bassist/Vocalist MARKO HIETALA Announces New Solo Album 'Roses From The Deep'

Former NIGHTWISH bassist/vocalist Marko Hietala has unveiled details of his new solo album, "Roses From The Deep", due on February 7, 2025 via Nuclear Blast. This marks Hietala's first major project since his critically acclaimed "Pyre Of The Black Heart" captivated fans worldwide in 2020.

"Roses From The Deep" promises to deliver a unique blend of dark, introspective lyricism and soaring, cinematic soundscapes. Drawing inspiration from myth, nature, and the human experience, Hietala has crafted an album that transcends genres, with elements of progressive rock, folk, and symphonic metal seamlessly intertwined.

"Roses From The Deep" represents a journey into the hidden layers of our emotions and the beauty we often overlook in darker times. It's an album about fragility, resilience, and finding light even in the depths of shadow.

The album's latest single, "Impatient Zero", arrives with a visually stunning music video. Featuring a stomping, groovy beat and a grand, anthemic chorus, the track is set to captivate listeners and perfectly set the tone for the rest of "Roses From The Deep".

"Impatient Zero" follows the huge success of the album's first two singles. "Left On Mars", a haunting duet with ex-NIGHTWISH singer Tarja Turunen, quickly became a fan favorite, showcasing the vocal chemistry between the two icons. The second single, "Frankenstein's Wife", with its dark storytelling and intricate composition, further heightened anticipation for Hietala's upcoming release.

Hietala comments on "Impatient Zero": "It's about a battle for being under a continuous assault of inner monsters. And the awful truth, that in this reality, people get to see those monsters, too, instead of the real face."

Track listing:

01. Frankenstein's Wife
02. Left On Mars
03. Proud Whore
04. Two Soldiers
05. The Dragon Must Die
06. The Devil You Know
07. Rebel Of The North
08. Impatient Zero
09. Tammikuu
10. Roses From The Deep

To mark the album release, Hietala will embark on a tour across Finland.

Feb. 07 - FI Lahti - Finlandia Klubi
Feb. 08 - FI Kuopio - Sawohouse Underground
Feb. 12 - FI Helsinki - Tavastia
Feb. 13 - FI Savonlinna - House Of Olaf
Feb. 14 - FI Tampere - Olympia-kortteli
Feb. 15 - FI Turku - Logomo

Lineup:

Marko Hietala - Bass, Vocals
Tuomas Wäinölä - Guitar
Vili Ollila / Bob Engstrand - Keyboards
Anssi Nykänen - Drums

Hietala announced his departure from NIGHTWISH in January 2021, explaining in a statement that he hadn't "been able to feel validated by this life for a quite a few years now." He has since been replaced by bassist Jukka Koskinen (WINTERSUN),who made his live debut with NIGHTWISH in May 2021 at the band's two interactive experiences.

This past March, Hietala was asked by Brazil's Ibagenscast if he would consider taking part in a reunion of the band's classic lineup, either for a tour or fresh material. He responded: "Hmm, I would consider it. But I think that the organization there would have to be looked very carefully into it and some of it would have to be dismantled. Because the business side and how the people there work, they are one of the big reasons why I left."

He continued: "In all the bands that I've been [in], I found out that I'm probably the most kind of courageous person there is and therefore also I have the inner strength to be the most honest and most fair and the one who upholds the justice between the people and taking care of everyone most. And that is something that I saw, the last years, were lacking. So, these kind of things would have to be taken care of. But I mean, [NIGHTWISH] was a big part of my life and I always, always backed up the music that we did because I love to do music that is versatile and ambitious with a lot of all kinds of atmospheres of all the world, from sensitive and soft into the big and pounding metal and all that. So, musically, I have no regrets at all. I'm happy and proud to have been a part of it. But, yeah, the organizational situation and the attitudes and who talks to whom and about what, those are things that I would totally dismantle and make into a transparent situation."

In an August 2022 interview with Finland's Chaoszine, Hietala revealed that he went through a dark period in his life, which included depression, insomnia, anxiety and an eventual attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis. Speaking about how he eventually came to the realization that exiting NIGHTWISH was the right thing to do, Marko said: "It was a long process. Of course, the COVID year that was there, where I had a lot of time for soul searching, it obviously gave me the last incentive that I need something else, that if I just continue with this I'm just gonna get sicker and sicker. But, of course, it's a process.

"I've been chronic depressive since 2010 [or] 2011, so I've been on a permanent medication ever since," he revealed. "Sometimes you get used to the meds [and] you will need more. We did raise [the dosage] during the years also, but it just didn't work. And now that I started to do… I had psychotherapy for over four years now, and then I also talked to psychiatrists and some doctors and did that also in Spain. Then my psychiatrist here in Finland said that I should do these ADHD neuropsychological tests, which I then did in Spain. And, okay, I got it."

Hietala reiterated that he "had been thinking about" leaving NIGHTWISH "for a while" before making the final decision. "Because I had a lot of weight. And I tend to… With the attention disorder, it tells me that when there are lots of trouble, then the disorder makes it into a real chaos," he explained. "There's a shitload of stuff coming and going and no peace anywhere. And for a year or two, I was already waking up every night at three o'clock to bad dreams and anxiety. So I'd say that the whole process probably started already with my former divorce [in 2016]. That was a very sad time when you think about your kids and your broken homes and all that. And then, when I started to get clear from that, then there were, well, all kinds of things. I don't really wanna go any deeper to what kind of things I'd gone through, but I'd gone through enough."

Acknowledging that making NIGHTWISH's 2020' album "Human. :II: Nature." was a "difficult" experience for him, Marko denied that his mental state at the time resulted in a diminished role for him on the final LP. "I think the original idea was to have that… we'll do a couple of [solo vocal appearances], or one solo for me and Troy [Donockley], and the rest Floor [Jansen], and then the harmonies; that was the idea originally for that," he said. "So I don't know if it affected. I think it was sort of as planned. But at that time I already had serious trouble with concentrating and serious trouble with a constant black cloud over my head."

In July 2022, Hietala told Finland's Iltalehti that he had not kept in touch with NIGHTWISH since his departure or followed the activities of his former band.

In December 2020, Hietala was crowned the winner of the fall 2020 season of "Masked Singer Suomi" — the Finnish edition of the popular masked singing contest. He was disguised as Tohtori — the Doctor.

LACABRA Issues New Single, Video “Human Quilt”

Returning from a week of shows in France, plus an appearance at last weekend’s Ruinfest, Seattle extreme metal band Lacabra return with a second single/music video. “Human Quilt” comes from the group’s full-length debut planned for release next spring.

"'Human Quilt' is about a psychic attack that creates a purposeful mental assault on lost and vulnerable human beings," explains vocalist Lance Neatherlin. "The sheer terror of will bending atrocities brought to these unfortunate people and their families is one of the saddest things I can imagine.  Bad things happen to good people."

The live video was shot by fans at the Funhouse in Seattle, showcasing the band’s frenzied live attack, with interspersed cult scenes driving the lyrics home, which were edited together by Jason Frost.

Lacabra rose from the ashes of Locisteller, whose promise fell apart during Covid-19 pandemic, but Lance Neatherlin (vocals) and Eric Snyder (guitar) recruited Eric Weber (bass), Michael Anthony (guitar), and Richie Sather (drums) transforming into Lacabra. Neatherlin and Snyder (also key members) While Lacabra takes a more straightforward and punishing approach with their music, and it’s fair to say that in Lacabra they’ve caught lightning in a bottle.

The band’s eclectic influences range from traditional heavy metal, dark wave, black metal as well as 1990’s melodic death metal, which they interweave seamlessly throughout their songs in a unique and purely original way. Their live shows are crushingly heavy and intense with dueling lead guitars and stage presence that rival any band out there today.

Their performances and unique sound have garnered them a reputation as a must-see band in the Pacific Northwest (US) and beyond, having shared the stage with bands such as Goatwhore, Crypta, Destruction

SHORES OF NULL Shares Live Video “My Darkest Years” From Hellfest 2024

Announcing their partnership with Thunderflix earlier this November to showcase their full live performance at this year's Hellfest Open Air (Temple Stage) in Clisson, France, Italian melodic death-doom force Shores of Null are sharing their next clip from the festival for the song "My Darkest Years" off their latest and fourth record The Loss of Beauty released on Spikerot Records during March 2023.

Vocalist Davide Straccione adds:

“Hellfest was the culmination of an intense promotional cycle during which we had the privilege of taking The Loss Of Beauty far and wide. Stepping onto that stage was an incredibly powerful experience, rewarding us for years of relentless hard work, dedication, and a deep love for what we do. We felt the energy of the crowd resonating with us, and in that moment, it truly felt like we were exactly where we were meant to be. On a personal level, it was a dream come true, and I believe I can speak for the entire band when I say it was the highlight of our career so far.”

Finnish metallers Fire Action have issued their electrifying new single and music video for "Survive", marking a thunderous preview of their upcoming studio album Until The Heat Dies. The single is also accompanied by a music video.

Vuortama aptly comments on the new songs: “It’s riffs, riffs, and riffs, with awesome melodies on top!”

METAL CHURCH / ROSS THE BOSS Vocalist MARC LOPES Releases Video For ORDEN OGAN Song "Hollow"

Metal Church and Ross The Boss vocalist, Marc Lopes, has unveiled a brand-new video for “Hollow”, a standout track from the 2022 AFM Records release, Orden Ogan And Friends. After years of delays due to various commitments, the video has finally been completed and released as a personal passion project by Lopes.

Recorded during the global shutdown, “Hollow” features Lopes’s signature vocal prowess in a collaboration spearheaded by Orden Ogan mastermind Seeb Sebastian.

Reflecting on the project, Lopes shared: “When Seeb reached out to me to be part of this amazing collaboration, it was an easy ‘Yes’ and a huge honor to be included alongside so many incredible vocalists in our genre. The original assignment was to record the lead vocals, but in true Marc Lopes fashion, I went overboard and recorded 20-plus tracks of harmonies, grunts, and everything else I could think of. It might have been a little overkill at the time—sorry, Seeb!—but I felt it would add my personal touch to the song.”

Despite its completion in 2022, the video’s release was delayed due to Lopes’s commitments to touring with Ross the Boss and Metal Church, as well as running his creative design company, Sonatheria, which produced the video.

“This video was a personal project I chipped away at over the years, and I’m thrilled to finally share it with everyone. A huge thank you to Seeb, Orden Ogan, and AFM Records for including me on this killer album. I hope you all enjoy it!”

GREAT AMERICAN GHOST Shares “Kerosene” Music Video

Great American Ghost have shared the arrival of “Kerosene,” the fourth single from the band’s upcoming album Tragedy Of The Commons out January 31 on SharpTone Records. The track opens the record with a buzzsaw riff and pummeling industrial-style beat. Taking inspiration from bands like Nine Inch Nails and HEALTH as much as Slayer and Meshuggah, “Kerosene” signals Great American Ghost’s ability to write killer songs that transcend genre. The video for the track, directed and edited by Anthony Altamura, evokes a spine-chilling and anxious blend of horror.

Vocalist Ethan Harrison comments on the song: “Kerosene is a song about absolute nihilism. If the world is truly hopeless, forlorn, irredeemable, then this is its anthem.”

Upholding an uncompromising vision with clear intention, Great American Ghost know exactly what they want to say about their community, the greater world around them, and humanity as a species. Tragedy Of The Commons offers a powerful statement on exploitation, oppression, and scarcity. On the Will Putney produced record, Great American Ghost transmit their message without filter delivered through a combination of basement-born hardcore spirit, staggering metallic precision, polemic lyrical provocations, and unexpectedly arresting melodies.

Tragedy Of The Commons is available for preorder through Sharptone Records.

Great American Ghost have a hometown headline show in Manchester, New Hampshire on December 14 at Jewel Music Venue. The band will join Bleed From Within and After The Burial on a European tour next fall.

Great American Ghost is Ethan Harrison (vocals), Grayson Stewart (guitar), Anthony Laur (bass) and Niko Gasparrini (guitar).

MIKE TRAMP Shares "Till Death Do Us Part" Single + Cinematic Video

"Till Death Do Us Part" is the latest single from famed rock vocalist and guitarist, Mike Tramp. The track is off his latest studio album Songs Of White Lion - Vol. II, which is out via Frontiers Music Srl. The album's ten tracks see Tramp re-imagining select cuts from his former band White Lion. "Till Death Do Us Part" is accompanied by a new music video. Watch below:

About the new album, Tramp shared: "Would Leonardo Da Vinci have re-painted Mona Lisa, if he had gotten a second chance? That, we will never know, but I can say for sure, that I am beyond thrilled to have gotten a second chance to re-record and sing the songs I wrote between 1983 and 1990. Today I have such a better understanding of how I want to express the songs in my voice than I had when I was in my 20’s, it’s just a fact, and I’ve grabbed the chance. 'Songs Of White Lion' is a whole new chapter, matter of fact it is current."

Tramp is out now on tour supporting Songs Of White Lion - Vol.II. For a current list of dates, head here.

PATHOGENIC Shares Video For "Mass Grave Memory"

Boston's Pathogenic is set to make a triumphant return with the release of Crowned In Corpses, a brutal and immersive display of progressive tech death. This marks their first full-length release in over half a decade, promising a bold evolution of their signature brand of progressive tech death, while retaining the intensity that has defined the band for years.

This is evident in the album's first single, "Mass Grave Memory". The official music video for the song can be seen below.

Pathogenic vocalist Jake Burns reveals the song's lyrical themes: “'Mass Grave Memory' asks the ultimate question: What do we gain when we destroy everything? It’s a vivid portrayal of nuclear war’s aftermath — the searing light, the choking ash, and the silence of a world undone. Above all, it stands as a stark warning of what will await us if humanity loses control.”

Skepsis Recordings will release Crowned In Corpses on February 7, 2025. Pre-order the album now at this location.
