GATECREEPER Announce Dark Superstition Album; "The Black Curtain" Single And Video Out Now

Gatecreeper’s Dark Superstition is leading a new wave of American death metal. Their sprawling third full-length, and label debut for Nuclear Blast, is more concise, melodic, and memorable than anything they’ve ever done. It’s a pivotal moment which sees vocalist Chase H. Mason, guitarists Eric Wagner and Israel Garza, drummer Metal Matt Arrebollo and bassist Alex Brown carving out their own path.

Dark Superstition deals with the supernatural, divination, fear of the unknown, and trust in magic or chance. “Many of the songs incorporate supernatural ideas with my own experiences,” Mason says. “But the title itself is a reference to the Superstition Mountains in our home state of Arizona. It’s a beautiful mountain range surrounded by tragedy and legends of hidden fortune.”

The album’s intricate lead single, "The Black Curtain" leans heavily in a rock direction, and embodies Dark Superstition’s themes with a tale of divination. “It’s about being trapped between living and dying,” Mason tells. “A soul trapped in purgatory begging to be brought back by a supernatural force.” “The Black Curtain” is available today alongside a video directed by Max Moore. Listen to the song here, and watch the video below.

Dark Superstition moves swiftly from one brutal soundscape to the next, each sonic structure evoking its own emotion and landscape. To help perfect their game this round, Gatecreeper joined forces with drummer / songwriter Fred Estby, of Swedish death metal titans Dismember, whose influences can be heard throughout the album. Dark Superstition was recorded at God City Studios in Salem, MA with Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou, who also mixed the album.

The album sees its release May 17 via Nuclear Blast Records. Pre-order/pre-save the album here.

Scotland's DVNE To Release Voidkind Album In April; "Plērōma" Video Posted

Scotland's Dvne will release their new full-length, Voidkind, on April 19th via Metal Blade Records.

Formed in Edinburgh in 2013 by Frenchman Victor Vicart and native Scot Dudley Tait, progressive post-metal/sludge artisans Dvne have been building a powerful head of steam since their second album, 2021's kaleidoscopically mesmerizing Etemen Ænka. Their first release for Metal Blade Records, the LP was a concerted hike up the greasy pole for this enigmatic outfit, enabling Dvne to embark on UK and European headline tours and win spots at such discerning festivals as Hellfest, ArcTanGent, Desertfest, Damnation, and Resurrection. A live EP of reimagined album tunes, 2022's Cycles Of Asphodel, kept up their profile while satiating demand from a rapidly mushrooming fanbase, and now in 2024, stunning third album Voidkind looks set to propel this expanded five-piece line-up (welcoming Maxime Keller on keyboards) to the top of their game.

Voidkind succeeds in finding new modes of expression for Dvne. The songs are more pointed, direct, and memorable, but the soundscape still has a radiant, evolving, hypnotic flow, the effect achieved with fewer layers of sonic ornamentation, consciously urging closer to Dvne's incendiary live sound. And despite the addition of a full-time keyboardist, Vicart has no doubt about the album's defining feature, "We wanted very distinct left and right guitars, and punchier drums and bass, which would transcribe better live. And the synths needed to be clearer; it's very easy to put five guitars on each side, loads of different vocals and keys, but then you end up watching a band with an album you really like, and the songs sound nothing like the record. That's what we wanted to avoid. As soon as the song starts, we want people to immediately recognise the riff."

Conceptually, the lyrics continue the band's overarching narrative - "following a religious group through the generation line from the beginning to its end" - while Voidkind's extraordinary sleeve art depicts the main theme of this chapter, namely, "a godlike entity seducing and luring followers through their dreams and these followers' multigenerational journey to reach their god dimension."

One book that has been particularly impactful on the band's thought process: 1989 novel Hyperion by Dan Simmonds. Notes Vicart, "It's a very dark Sci-Fi book with loads of interesting parts, so you can go really prog with it, but you can also go more violent and animalistic." Further inspirational touchstones include FromSoftware video game Dark Souls, and the Japanese manga series that inspired it, Berserk, "It's a very cool, violent, psychedelic, medieval dark fantasy," explains Vicart. "We wanted to have these kinds of visuals and aesthetics on this album, in this mix-up of things. Even without the vocals we wanted to evoke something, different places and spaces, and take the listener on a journey."

Vicart further elaborates on the themes driving "Plerõma," the first single from Voidkind, and its accompanying video, which was directed by Vicart, "Plerõma is a concept that has appeared in Gnosticism, Greek Philosophy, and Judeo-Christian religions. In Gnosticism, it is the spiritual universe as the abode of God and of the totality of the divine powers and emanations. It is also the ultimate source of transformation. Plerõma is a key moment of the album narrative where religious followers are consuming the essence of their deity and reach a new sense of awakened existence. It is the first step in their transformation. Musically it also represents something similar to us, as it is a song that is bringing new elements that we didn't explore musically until that point."

Watch the "Plerõma" video below.

Voidkind was recorded between September and November 2023 in Edinburgh at Craigiehall Temple and Byres Farm in Scotland and features the stunning artwork of Felix Abel Klae.

The record will be released on CD and digital formats as well as 2xLP in the following color variants:

Legendary Rockers BLUE ÖYSTER CULT Share Music Video For New Single 'Don't Come Running To Me'

Legendary rockers BLUE ÖYSTER CULT have shared the second single from their upcoming album "Ghost Stories", due out April 12 via Frontiers Music Srl. The track, titled "Don't Come Running To Me", is accompanied by a new music video which can be seen below.

After the resounding success of their 50th-anniversary celebration, legendary rockers BLUE ÖYSTER CULT are eagerly gearing up for an exciting new chapter in their storied career with the upcoming release of "Ghost Stories". This highly anticipated album marks a fitting finale to the recording legacy of one of rock's most iconic fixtures from the past 50 years.

In a thrilling partnership with Frontiers Music Srl, BLUE ÖYSTER CULT is set to captivate fans with a collection of reimagined and completed songs that span from 1978-2016. These musical treasures, long considered the "lost gems" by BLUE ÖYSTER CULT enthusiasts, were originally recorded between 1978 and 1983, except for one track from 2016, "If I Fell". Also included is the only known recorded performance of their concert classic "Kick Out The Jams" (MC5 cover). Some of the material is from workshopping albums, some from performance rehearsals, and all were recorded once in the hopes that someday they'd see the light of day.

George Geranios, the band's original audio engineer and an integral part of the band's golden years, produced the tracks along with BÖC and all were originally recorded on reel-to-reel analog tape. He transferred them to digital audio which is when modern AI and magical musical talents meet and the collection of vintage multi-track recordings was de-mixed, re-mixed, and produced by Steve Schenck and Richie Castellano to become "Ghost Stories".

Work in the studio for the album was completed by Richie Castellano along with remaining original members Eric Bloom and Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser, and both Albert Bouchard and Rick Downey appear on drums with additional overdubs recorded by Joe Bouchard. All these original lineup members appearing on "Ghost Stories" create a musical journey that traverses decades and promises easter eggs for days.

As BLUE ÖYSTER CULT embraces its "classic rock" phenomenon status, the anticipation for this album is reaching a crescendo. Fans are eager to experience the culmination of the band's artistic vision and witness the completion of songs that have become part of their folklore. The band will also add some of the songs in their upcoming 2024 shows.

With a legacy spanning over five decades, BLUE ÖYSTER CULT continues to be a formidable force in the classic rock scene. The exciting partnership with Frontiers Music Srl and the visionary leadership of Serafino Perugino add an extra layer of anticipation to the release of "Ghost Stories". Attila Vörös - Guitar
László Csóka - Bass

Stephen Horvat - Vocals

On February 12, 2005, Balu Koncz, singer of the Hungarian band EVERWOOD, staged the first-ever "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott memorial show in Hungary right after the PANTERA guitarist's tragic loss. The following year, Vörös met with drummer László Makai in the local music school, Kőbányai Zenei Stúdió in Budapest. One day they were hanging out at the school buffet talking about their mutual favorite band PANTERA, resulting in them jamming "New Level" for the first time ever. Right at that moment it became clear they wanted more, so they recruited Zoltán Prepelicza on bass who was also a student there. After a few rehearsals they invited a singer Péter Mári, whom Attila met with not too long before and saw on a talent scout show with Péter's first band and was absolutely blown away by his singing and stage presence. After only six rehearsals, the band, which Attila had named REMEMBERING THE STEEL had its first show in Debrecen, Hungary. Soon after, Péter left the band and moved to Great Britain to follow his dreams with his own band.

In 2018, during this hiatus, the band was asked to play a one-off show with guest vocalists. It was then when they met with a young and promising singer and songwriter András "Apey" Áron. When Apey came down to their first rehearsal and sang "This Love", it was instantly clear that they needed and wanted to continue playing with each other. But then in 2009, Attila left the country to follow his own path, which later led to him joining the legendary Seattle-based band NEVERMORE.

Since Attila didn't move to the States and was able to fly in for shows and rehearsals, he managed to form his own band in Hungary, called LEANDER RISING. It was during that same time when Attila met drummer Béla Budai in a rehearsal place and studio called Tonitrus Studio, the same place in which Attila recorded his NEVERMORE playthrough videos which later served as the "audition tapes" for his gig with the Warrel Dane-fronted act. The studio was run by engineer László Szabó who introduced Attila to Béla when looking for a drummer to form another PANTERA tribute band, which turned out to be VULGAR DISPLAY OF COVER. Péter, who had moved back to Hungary in the meantime, had rejoined the band, which also recruited bassist Zalán Guoth, whom Attila had previously played with in the METALLICA tribute band SCARY GUYZ. In 2019 Péter and Zalán left VULGAR DISPLAY OF COVER and were replaced by József "Jozzy" Takács on bass and Steven "Pityesz" Horváth on vocals.

In 2020 Attila was invited to and attended "Dimebash" in Anaheim, California. It was after that show when Attila decided that he wanted to make videos and lessons of Dimebag's playing and PANTERA songs on YouTube. His channel started to gradually grow and it was through those videos that Attila got in contact with Jelusick. Attila invited Dino as a guest to sing with VULGAR DISPLAY OF COVER at their annual Dimebag memorial show, which Attila has been organizing since 2009.

THE WARNING Announces New Album 'Keep Me Fed'

THE WARNING, the alternative sister-trio from Monterrey, Mexico consisting of Daniela "Dany" (guitar, lead vocals, piano),Paulina "Pau" (drums, vocals, piano) and Alejandra "Ale" Villarreal (bass, piano, backing vocals),will release its new full-length album, "Keep Me Fed", on June 28, 2024 via Lava/Republic Records. Physical products will be available at RepublicRecords.com, including CDs, vinyl, t-shirts, and fan packs.

In talking about the story behind the decision to name the album "Keep Me Fed", Pau says: "Throughout the whole process, the work was consuming us. By impacting everything we did, the album kept us fed both creatively and personally. We're inviting other people to participate and consume it too."

Bulldozing the way for the record's arrival, they just unveiled two singles, namely "Hell You Call A Dream" and the Spanish-language "Qué Más Quieres". Each song is also accompanied by its own lyric video.

Illuminating the band's evolution, the tracks hint at the breadth of their stunning signature style. On "Hell You Call A Dream", co-written and produced by Anton Delost (HIGHLY SUSPECT, MAYDAY PARADE) and Dan Lancaster (MUSE, BRING ME THE HORIZON),an arresting keyboard melody wraps around the punchy bass line. A distorted guitar groove anchors a hard-hitting hook, "Give me something to believe, in this hell you call a dream." Dany notes, "'Hell You Call A Dream' tries to express a feeling most musicians find hard to express. When you're touring, you experience the positives, the negatives, and the whole spectrum of emotion all at once. It's about how something you love so much can be something that also weighs you down, but you continue to do it out of love. It's fulfilling, but it's tiring."

The three-piece further flaunt their fiery versatility on "Qué Más Quieres". It tempers a robust riff with an electronic flurry, giving way to a chantable chorus with the power to resonate worldwide. "The title translates to 'What else do you want?'," Pau reveals. "It's about taunting and manipulating. We were thinking of the TikTok phrase 'Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss' and turned it into a song." Dany goes on, "It means a lot to sing in our language and represent our country. Over the years, doors have finally opened for Mexican women in rock, and we're actively participating in opening these doors where we can."

"Keep Me Fed" also features "More", which the band performed at the 2023 MTV VMAs, and the recently released fan favorite "S!ck" that is climbing the Active Rock charts. Revolver raved, "Like the Mexican sister-trio's previous output, it's undeniably infectious," and Classic Rock hailed it as a "shot-in-the-arm of propulsive, fire-spitting hard rock." Rolling Stone pegged it as one of "All The Songs You Need To Know This Week."

Next up, THE WARNING will perform at Mexico's prestigious Pa'l Norte and Vive Latino festivals followed by a month-long full-scale European tour this spring. It kicks off in Madrid at Sala La Riviera on April 4, canvases the continent, and concludes in London at O2 Forum Kentish Town on April 27.

The tour marks the band's return to Europe after their own 2023 run of beyond-sold-out headline European dates in addition to their monumental run supporting MUSE and ROYAL BLOOD on their stadium tours. They also sold out shows across Mexico, South America including their largest show to date in Mexico City at the infamous Pepsi Center.

THE WARNING draw strength and power from a lifetime of sisterhood and music. The Mexico-born sister trio have logged thousands of miles on the road, generated hundreds of millions of streams, and left countless fans in awe. All of this tireless work and dedication has shaped and sharpened their sound with knifepoint precision, arming alternative anthems with universally catchy hooks and an uncompromising hard rock kick. The girls have devoted themselves to a shared dream since their childhood in Monterrey, Mexico. They initially made waves with a string of independent releases, paving the way for their acclaimed 2022 full-length offering "Error". Between performing alongside MUSE, FOO FIGHTERS, GUNS N' ROSES, ROYAL BLOOD, THE PRETTY RECKLESS and THREE DAYS GRACE, the band ignited MTV's Extended Play Stage at the 2023 MTV VMAs. Representative of their cultural impact, Pepsi even notably chose them as the face of Pepsi Black in Mexico. Moreover, they emerged as the rare force who could comfortably appear in features by Vanity Fair, People, Cosmopolitan and Glamour as well as on METALLICA's star-studded "Blacklist" compilation.

ONWARD Guitarist TOBY KNAPP Releases Official Video For New Solo Track "Abramelin Carousel"

A video for the track "Abramelin Carousel" from the new Toby Knapp solo album, Transmission To Purgatory, was released this week. It can be viewed below.

Knapp talks about the inspiration for the track:

"I like to make music that reflects what I'm a fan of at that point in time. The last several years have been a cycle where I'm on a Traditional Heavy Metal kick so I do an Onward, Where Evil Follows or Necrytis album. After I get the Traditional Metal out of my system I go on to Black Metal, the complete opposite, because that genre becomes interesting to me again and I'll do a Waxen album. After that I get back into the old school instrumental guitar driven metal that I've always loved. These are my three genres and I have three separate record deals with Moribund to cover everything.

'Abramelin Carousel' is definitely me emulating my guitar heroes, so you've got the Yngwie influence and near the end of the track it's the Marty Friedman 'Dragon's Kiss' type of sound. I'm pretty strict about tunings and recording methods because I think a lot of new metal sounds the same especially the production aspect. I liked when albums sounded different because the recording circumstances were different. Shrapnel Records sounded like Prairie Sun Studios and early Black Metal sounded like a four track in a basement. Unisound Records in Greece, Morrisound studios in Florida. Now everyone has the Andy Sneap software or plug ins or whatever (not literally) and the albums sound huge, but the band is still just a thrash garage band live.

I got this title from a book I studied seriously for a few years called The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage. I was really into Aleister Crowley and Hermeticism and I practiced that stuff. It was so interesting and mysterious. I got foolish with the Abramelin book and skipped a bunch of steps in a magical process and got stuck in a bizarre magical vortex for awhile. It was very real. I had professional occultists step in and help me undo my mess. I recorded a Waxen album, Blasphemer In Celestial Courts, which was sort of a self exorcism and that was the end of my occult interests. This year I sold lots of my books off!

Odin Thompson (Moribund Records) is very knowledgeable about the occult and even the Hermetic, really old magic. He and video maker extraordinaire Luiz combined the Abramelin imagery with footage of me playing along with the song. I didn't realize this video was going to be so immersed in the occult and the first time I watched I was like 'Oh no! Not the squares again!' Those little squares can get you trouble. I did love the result. It just seemed to come from the ether.

Instrumental heavy metal has been a difficult genre to really 'succeed' in because it's heyday ended decades ago. I do it because I love it, obviously. Shrapnel President Mike Varney recently said something to the effect of 'guitar work need not be faster than the fastest guys on Shrapnel Records' and I agree with that. The song always comes first. I think Jason Becker Perpetual Burn is the perfect album of the genre and it's not something we're going to see again. I heard that album when I was sixteen and was wise enough to know "I can't do that, I'll never be able to do that!" I understood Jason Becker is a musical genius, I'm just a guitar player. This understanding served me well because I concentrated on the things I did excel at musically. In doing this, I got my record deal with Shrapnel Records after all and I'm still here making music and selling albums 30 years later."

KNOCKED LOOSE Announces New Album 'You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To'

Louisville, Kentucky's KNOCKED LOOSE, which plays a blend of hardcore and metalcore music, will release a new album, "You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To", on May 10 via Pure Noise Records.

On "You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To", KNOCKED LOOSE have honed in on a diverse, cohesive and savagely aggressive album that sums up the massive strides they've taken during their decade as a band, and asserts their boundless potential going forward. Internally, there was the need to challenge themselves as songwriters while retaining the merciless intensity and unflinching honesty that have always been their calling cards. Externally, there was a whole new set of eyes on the hard-touring quintet, following a banner year on the road, during which they'd brought their underground-seasoned sound to some of the world's biggest stages.

From the start, "You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To" plunges listeners into a cauldron of mental and spiritual anguish. But the album's title contains a note of reassurance amid the turmoil. The phrase originates from an experience that frontman Bryan Garris, who suffers from what he calls a "borderline phobia of flying," had during a particularly trying flight. As he battled his nerves during takeoff, the vocalist found himself talking to a woman seated next to him. When he confided in her about his anxiety, she assured, "You won't go before you're supposed to."

But glossing over negative emotions isn't what KNOCKED LOOSE are about. The new songs find them plumbing through new depths of loathing — directed both inward and outward. Their raging lead single "Blinding Faith" skillfully wields whiplash tempo changes in service of a scathing indictment of religious groupthink, and the hypocrisy that can sometimes accompany an outwardly pious life.

"It was just hilarious how many people showed up to church that I knew were rude, horrible, selfish people," guitarist Isaac Hale reflects of attending church with his mother in his younger years. "They knew that it made them seem like a better person — or if they said the words, it would redeem them of any negative quality just because they showed face."

"Blinding Faith" is available today alongside a video directed by Kevin Lombardo. Watch below.

Across 10 tracks and 27 gripping minutes, "You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To" leans into KNOCKED LOOSE's most extreme impulses, from blastbeat-driven fury, chaotic turbulence and seismic breakdowns, while seasoning the mix with ear-catching auxiliary percussion, evocative samples and shout-along hooks, all interwoven to perfection by Grammy-nominated, pop-savy producer Drew "WZRD BLD" Fulk.

"You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To" is filled with boundary-pushing textures and samples the band has collected over the years. On "Suffocate", Garris teams up with pop-meets-metal trailblazer Poppy, for an effort that contrasts an oppressive heaviness befitting the title with a dance-y, syncopated groove and the most concussive reggaeton rhythm you've ever heard. Samples of what sounds like meditative singing bowls open the album to "Take Me Home", with its spoken-word intro, ear-catching auxiliary percussion and brief yet evocative concluding country-song snippet. Elements like these only make the breakneck blur of a track like "Moss Covers All", a song that Garris says deals with his ever-present longing for the comfort of home, feel that much more urgent.

"On this album, we go the fastest we've ever gone; we go the scariest we've ever gone. We also go the catchiest and the most melodic that we've ever gone, and that's the point," Hale says. "Instead of branching off into a specific direction, we want to encompass ALL directions."

There's no ceiling for hardcore in 2024 — even an outfit as uncompromising as KNOCKED LOOSE can turn up in mainstream-adjacent spaces and win over new fans (see 2023's viral Coachella and Bonnaroo sets). But there's a center to what they do that will never change: uncompromising heaviness, both sonically and thematically. What is evolving is their drive to find new ways to convey that heaviness, and add tasteful variety that only highlights their undiminished ferocity. Everywhere KNOCKED LOOSE have been is here on this record — but so is everywhere they may yet go.

KNOCKED LOOSE are currently wrapping a sold-out European run and hit the road again late April on a headlining North American tour. The run hits both coasts and includes two sold-out nights in New York City at Brooklyn Steel and Terminal 5 plus sold out shows at Austin's Stubb's Amphitheater, The Shrine in Los Angeles and more. SHOW ME THE BODY, LOATHE and SPEED will support.

EARTHBURNER Feat. BROKEN HOPE’s JEREMY WAGNER Sign With M-Theory Audio; “Slaves To The Screen” Video Released

After years of being on the "back-burner," Earthburner has finally arrived and is now armed with their debut album, Permanent Dawn, which was recorded at Criteria Recording Studios (Black Sabbath, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles) in Miami, FL, produced by Tommy McWilliams (Elegant Weapons) and Jeremy Wagner, mixed by Scott Creekmore (Broken Hope, Putrid Pile, Morta Skuld), and mastered by Mike Fuller (Obituary, Death, Broken Hope, Judas Priest) of Fullersound in Davie, FL. M-Theory Audio recently signed Earthburner with plans to release Permanent Dawn later this year.

In anticipation of this upcoming release, Earthburner has now debuted the first single off the record: "Slaves To The Screen." A 3D-animated video for the track (created by video jedi, Andrea Mantelli of Andrea Mantelli Productions).

Earthburner vocalist and lyricist Devin Swank has this to say about "Slaves To The Screen": "This song was written about how our world seems to be fixated with what new products are out, what clothing you should wear, what food to stuff your fat face with and what bullshit is flooding the mainstream and how people completely immerse themselves in it. It's a perfect welcoming for Earthburner as we're just 4 guys who stick their middle fingers in the face of the norm and play classick death metal/grindcore! I'm so excited for this to get to the ears of people who are fans of death/grind and all things heavy and with the help of M-Theory Audio it can get into the hands of such people too."

Regarding Earthburner's "Slaves To The Screen" single and video, plus Permanent Dawn, guitarist Jeremy Wagner says: "I'm super-pumped about our first single, 'Slaves To The Screen,' being released for the world to hear. This song is one of my favorite tracks on the album...and as a pre-album release track, I feel it properly represents what Earthburner is all about—and what people can expect from our 'Permanent Dawn' album. The song is so ferocious and pummeling that it just makes me want to DESTROY SHIT! Haha! Moreover, the 3D animated video that accompanies the single is so freaking cool. Video designer—Andrea Mantelli—absolutely killed it!

"Speaking of the Permanent Dawn album, it's been a longtime coming for me. I've wanted to do a full-length Earthburner album forever. I'm far beyond happy that the stars aligned...I got my dream lineup and I got the opportunity to make this debut album.

"Relevant to the 'stars aligning,' I think that things happen for a reason because my dream lineup happened at the perfect time, AND, we signed a great record deal with Marco Barbieri and M-Theory Audio—this is a huge, full-circle thing for me because Marco is the guy who originally signed Broken Hope to Metal Blade Records and set my musical journey into motion in a huge way. So, this album is extra special to me on numerous levels. Marco has always believed in me and my music and THAT means the world to me.

"I've said before that Earthburner is a separate monster from Broken Hope in terms of style, genre, tuning, vocals, and pure blasting ferocity. And my insane love for Terrorizer's 'World Downfall' album and old Napalm Death and others inspired me and really drove me to do something faithful to this über-extreme genre.

"Thanks to my stepson Tyler, and Devin Swank from Sanguisugabogg, they lit a fire under my ass to bring Earthburner back in a big way, full-time.

"Huge thanks to all of the fans of the original Earthburner EP, everyone who's been waiting for Earthburner to come along with an album. The album is on the way for release in 2024—for now, enjoy 'Slaves To The Screen'! We can't wait for you hear the 'Permanent Dawn' album—and I hope you all get to see Earthburner on stage!"
