KORN Guitarist JAMES 'MUNKY' SHAFFER's Experimental Electronic Project VENERA Releases 'Disintegration' Single

KORN Guitarist JAMES 'MUNKY' SHAFFER's Experimental Electronic Project VENERA Releases 'Disintegration' Single

VENERA, a newly formed experimental electronic outfit featuring James "Munky" Shaffer (KORN) and Atlanta-based composer/filmmaker Chris Hunt, has shared the song "Disintegration". The track is the third, and final, preview of VENERA's self-titled debut album, which is due on October 13 via Ipecac Recordings.

"We hoped to explore drifting, gridless timelines of drums and guitars, which converge midway in a wall of harmony and chorale," explains Hunt of the five-minute song that features drummer Deantoni Parks (THE MARS VOLTA, JOHN CALE). He continues, speaking directly to the video, which also features words by author Blake Butler: "Blake's text sees and explodes light and experience in a way that is deeply committed to density and emotion — an honest voice in 'Disintegration'."

VENERA previously released a pair of songs, "Swarm" and "Hologram", featuring Rizz from VOWWS, which Revolver described as "mesmerizing" and EDM.com noted: "With its deep bass and ambient sound design, the experimental bass track is both haunting and chilling."

Several guests join Hunt and Shaffer on VENERA. Parks also plays on "Erosion", HEALTH's Jacob Duzsik contributes vocals on "Ochre" and Alain Johannes lends his voice to "Triangle".

Album pre-orders are available now, with "Venera" available digitally, as well as physically on CD, and an assortment of vinyl, including limited-edition red, snowy white and skull gold variants.

"Venera" track listing:

01. Alignment
02. Erosion (ft. Deantoni Parks)
03. Ochre (ft. HEALTH)
04. Swarm
05. Disintegration (ft. Deantoni Parks)
06. Hologram (ft. VOWWS)
07. Surrender
08. Triangle (ft. Alain Johannes)
09. Helium

Los Angeles-based James Shaffer and Atlanta-based Chris Hunt converged in early 2022 in downtown Los Angeles while working on songs for singer Xhoana X. Their kindred interest and backgrounds in dramatic texture, electronics and experimentation inspired an improvisation-based recording process which seeks to explore a sonic universe defined by evolving atmosphere, cinematic noise and select collaborations with other artists.

Watch FLYLEAF's Final Performance Of 2023 At BLUE RIDGE ROCK FESTIVAL

Watch FLYLEAF's Final Performance Of 2023 At BLUE RIDGE ROCK FESTIVAL

Soundlink magazine has uploaded video of FLYLEAF's performance at this year's Blue Ridge Rock Festival on Friday, September 8 in Alton, Virginia. Check out the clips below.

The band's setlist was as follows:

01. Chasm
02. Again
03. Freedom
04. Fire Fire
05. Something I Can Never Have (NINE INCH NAILS cover)
06. I'm So Sick
07. Cassie
08. Arise
09. Cage On The Ground
10. Fully Alive
11. All Around Me

In an interview with Ned of Iowa's Rock 108 radio station conducted at this past July's Upheaval festival in Grand Rapids, Michigan, singer Lacey Sturm spoke about how she ended up reuniting with FLYLEAF for their first live shows together in 11 years. She said: "Well, actually, my assistant that was on tour with us from the very beginning of FLYLEAF; we were called PASSERBY at that time. We were touring in an '88 Ford Club Wagon van, and we had a bunch of gear in the back with a mattress on top, and you could climb in there and sleep. She actually came on tour with us to be a stylist or a merch person — whatever we needed. She was with us from the beginning. So she got married. And we hadn't seen each other in, like, ten years, nine years, and so we all ended up at the wedding together. And that's how it started."

Sturm went on to say that her reunion with FLYLEAF came together in a "more organic" way than has been the case with some of the other high-profile band reunions in recent years. "I think it had to be that way," she said. "There were some offers for us to get back together, to do reunion shows, but we hadn't seen each other, and everybody has different lives, lots of children. So it didn't really make sense in those times, but because we were already connecting, we figured it out."

Regarding her plans for FLYLEAF and her ongoing solo project in the coming months, Lacey said: "We just have these five festivals [Sick New World, Rock Fest, Upheaval, Inkcarceration and Blue Ridge] — actually, we just added these two on last minute — but we just had the five festivals booked with FLYLEAF. And that was all that we had. Moving forward, again, with the families, and the bandmembers have families, it's hard to figure out how to, like… what does it look like. So that's all we have planned with FLYLEAF. The solo project stuff I do with my husband. It's been in the works for, like, five years, another album. And so we just put out a song a couple of days, which coincided with these shows, which was just — I don't know — it just all converged. It was not intentional, really. But it all worked out. So here we have a song coming out, and hopefully we'll have an album out at the end of August that we've been working on for five years. It's sort of all coming together."

FLYLEAF played its first concert with Sturm in 11 years on April 27 at Schoepf's BBQ in Belton, Texas.

FLYLEAF, which hadn't performed live since 2016 prior to the Belton concert, made its final festival appearance of this year at the Blue Ridge Rock Festival.

Sturm left FLYLEAF in October 2012. She was replaced by Kristen May, who recorded one album with the group, 2014's "Between The Stars", before exiting.

Lacey opened up about her reasons for her departure from FLYLEAF in a video promoting her 2014 memoir "The Reason: How I Discovered A Life Worth Living". At the time, she said: "We were on our second album when I got married. And the album was called 'Memento Mori'. And 'memento mori' means remember you're mortal, remember that you'll die and remember that your life is short and precious and so are the lives of those around you.

"For two years, I toured with my husband and it was really amazing, and then after those two years, we ended up getting pregnant with my son," she continued. "And I recognized that my priorities were gonna change even more and that message of 'memento mori' and remembering how short your life is was really weighing on my heart.

"We toured for ten years. I mean, we weren't home for more than a month, probably, a year. So, for me, I just felt really blessed to be pregnant and to be in a place where I could stay home if I wanted to, and really ask that question: how is this gonna change my priorities? How is this gonna look? We had a few things happen that really brought that message home, but the one that hit the hardest was the death of our sound engineer [Rich Caldwell]. We did one last show with FLYLEAF as a benefit for his wife Katy and their son Kirby. And it was really hard to do a show without him, and it was really hard to think it could be our last show. So I remember looking at my son after Rich had passed and just wondering to myself, if this was the last year I had with my son, how would I spend it?

"It was really amazing to recognize this season changing in my life and the freedom that I was gonna be able to focus on my family. And I'm so thankful for that time. And although it was really hard, I'm thankful. And that's the reason I stepped down from FLYLEAF."

Back in 2016, Sturm was asked in an interview with RockRevolt Magazine if there was chance that she could reunite with her former bandmates after they had parted ways with May. She responded: "Well, you know, I feel like I'm the kind of person that I think so much happened that I never in a million years thought would happen, so I've learned to quit saying 'never.' But at the same time, I'm a really present person."

She added at the time: "I don't have any plans for that, but then again, you never know. I don't know… [Laughs] They haven't called me. And I don't have any plans [to go back]."

At several shows last year, Sturm joined SEETHER on stage to perform the FLYLEAF song "I'm So Sick".

This past July, Lacey debuted a music video for her aggressively introspective new song "Reconcile", a long-awaited follow-up to 2021's "Awaken Love".

CYHRA Share "Let's Have My Story Told" Guitar Playthrough Video

CYHRA Share "Let's Have My Story Told" Guitar Playthrough Video

Four years after their last studio album No Halos in Hell, Cyhra have released their new album, The Vertigo Trigger. The Swedes' third full-length reflects exactly what the melodic metal band stands for: ear-splitting riffs, catchy choruses and plenty of melodies that make the band truly stand out.

Guitarists Euge Valovirta and  Marcus Sunesson have shared a playthrough video for the song "Let's Have My Story Told". Check it out below.

Cyhra released The Vertigo Trigger on August 18th via Nuclear Blast Records. They held an album release party in Gothenburg, Sweden at Valand on the same day. Fan-filmed video is available below.

The setlist was as follows:

"Ashlight"
"Let's Have My Story Told"
"Letter to Myself"
"Bye Bye Forever"
"I Am the One"
"1,000,000 Fahrenheit"

"Heartrage"
"Battle From Within"
"Ready to Rumble"
"Life Is A Hurricane"
"Live A Little"
"If I"
"Here to Save You"
"Dreams Gone Wrong"
"Out of My Life"

Founded by vocalist Jake E (ex-Amaranthe) and guitarist Jesper Strömblad (ex-In Flames), and with the addition of lead guitarist Euge Valovirta (ex-Shining) and drummer Alex Landenburg (Kamelot), Cyhra has already released two highly acclaimed albums which proof that the band have managed to create their own identity and sound.

Now in 2023, coming four years after their last album, No Halos In Hell, The Vertigo Trigger is Cyhra's third studio album, and their first featuring recently added guitarist Marcus Sunesson (ex-The Crown / Engel). The band released the album’s first single 'Ready To Rumble' last autumn, and fans will now undoubtedly be pleased to learn that the track is a part of a new full-length record.

Recorded in the summer/autumn of 2022, The Vertigo Trigger is the band's darkest album to date. The album was entirely self-produced and mixed by guitarist Euge Valovirta, whilst the mastering was handled by long-term producer Jacob Hansen. This new album offers fans the classic Cyhra sound, full of the band's trademarks, but fresh and refined. The Swedes have modernised their song writing meaning that no Cyhra fan will be disappointed, making The Vertigo Trigger a more than worthy successor to their first two albums.

And although guitarist Jesper Strömblad isn’t a part of Cyhra's live shows currently, he was deeply involved in the writing and recording process of the album. Therefore, the band can hardly wait for his return as soon as he is ready again.

The Vertigo Trigger tracklisting:

"Ready To Rumble"
"Let's Have My Story Told"
"Live A Little"
"1,000,000 Fahrenheit"

THE HIRSCH EFFEKT's Urian Album Unboxed; Video

THE HIRSCH EFFEKT's Urian Album Unboxed; Video

German prog-metal trio, The Hirsch Effekt, have released an unboxing video for their new album Urian, out on September 29 via Long Branch Records. Watch below:

The Hirsch Effekt, consisting of multi-instrumentalists Nils Wittrock (i.a. vocals, guitars), Ilja John Lappin (i.a. bass, vocals) and Moritz Schmidt (drums), plays an extremely variable style of music, as well as combines various elements to the utter peak of sophistication.

The end result is nothing less than a homogenous and enormous sound monster, nearly beating your speakers to death. Although the very first impressions coalesce into an epic, aggressive, and sinister sound, there is a specific personal touch and frankness in the German lyrics. They signify authenticity and closeness and stand out as a counterpart to the musical periphery.

Pre-order/save Urian here.

Urian tracklisting:

"Otus"
"2054"
"Urian"
"Stegodon"
"Granica"

LED ZEPPELIN's Fourth Album To Be Released On Crystal-Clear Vinyl For ATLANTIC's 75th Anniversary

LED ZEPPELIN's Fourth Album To Be Released On Crystal-Clear Vinyl For ATLANTIC's 75th Anniversary

As part of Atlantic Records' 75th-anniversary celebration, the label — in conjunction with Rhino Entertainment — has launched an extensive year-long vinyl series featuring 90 releases spanning the entire history of the company, from its earliest days until the present. The series encompasses iconic and acclaimed albums across virtually every popular musical genre, including special editions and many that have never been on vinyl. The unprecedented series has been curated by Atlantic Records chairman and CEO Craig Kallman, who — in addition to his role as the label's chief executive — is one of the world's foremost audiophiles, with a personal vinyl collection now numbering over two million LPs.

Each month's Atlantic 75 collection reflects the label's diverse and rich history. With most titles pressed in crystal clear vinyl, releases included span groundbreaking works that underline the genre-defiant greatness of the label's release over the years. In addition, Atlantic has partnered with noted audiophile label Acoustic Sounds for a multi-year-long slate of 180-gram, 45RPM black vinyl, and SACD versions of classic Atlantic albums. The label has also partnered with beloved vinyl subscription service VMP (Vinyl Me, Please) for their first ever label collection for Record Of The Month, which will be available for VMP members on Thursday, October 19, shipping early November.

"Our 75th anniversary has given us an incredible opportunity to revisit the amazing range and depth of the music that Atlantic has released across the decades," said Kallman. "These 90 albums are not only an extraordinary musical journey through the years, but a cultural one as well, reflecting a series of seismic social shifts. As an admitted vinyl junkie, I'm honored and thrilled to join with our colleagues at Rhino, our longtime friends at Acoustic Sounds, and the great folks at VMP to give all this brilliant music the royal LP treatment. It's been a true labor of love, and the perfect celebration of this landmark anniversary."

As part of the ongoing series, Atlantic has announced the October 27 release of LED ZEPPELIN's paradigm-shifting untitled fourth album, commonly referred to as "Led Zeppelin IV". "Led Zeppelin IV", produced by Jimmy Page, will be pressed on crystal-clear, 180-gram vinyl.

Titles from the collection are available to order at store.atlanticrecords.com.

BLACK STONE CHERRY Has 'Gone Up Musically Another Level' After Bassist Switch

BLACK STONE CHERRY Has 'Gone Up Musically Another Level' After Bassist Switch

In a new interview with Scott Itter of Dr. Music, BLACK STONE CHERRY guitarist Ben Wells spoke about the 2021 departure of bassist Jon Lawhon and addition of his replacement, Steve Jewell Jr. (ex-OTIS). He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "Yeah, it was kind of an adjustment at first. It was coming out of the — well, it was still in the pandemic during the time. I think that kind of changed a lot of people. And we respected his wishes to come off the road. And it was an adjustment, because we'd always been together. But luckily for us, as far as the band moving on, Steve, our bass player now, was the first guy that we called, because he's from the same town as we are. He grew up just like we did, and he's always been around. He was in a band called OTIS that used to open up for us. And so he's always been a part of our chemistry in a different way before he was in the band, because he would always be hanging out with us and stuff. So that wasn't a thing we had to get used to — somebody else's personality — 'cause we already knew the guy. And then, of course, he's a super-talented musician, and we're just so honored and lucky to have him now. And you can listen to the [new BLACK STONE CHERRY] record ['Screamin' At The Sky'] and you hear his bass playing on it. He even played slide guitar on the song 'Nervous'. He was just amazing."

Ben continued: "I think we have we've gone up musically now, dynamically another level, just because his heart is on fire for music and he has such a passion for it. And, yeah, we're lucky to have him. And he has just as much energy as I do when it comes to playing live, which is a great thing. Now, people, when they come to see us, they don't know who to watch, which is awesome, because I love that. So it was an adjustment at first, but luckily, I think everything happens for a reason, and we're just glad to be able to still be here and put out this album."

BLACK STONE CHERRY recently announced a co-headline tour with GIOVANNIE AND THE HIRED GUNS. The run begins on November 2 at Piere's in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Fourteen appearances have been announced, wrapping with a performance on November 18 at Columbia, Missouri's Blue Note.

"Screamin' At The Sky" will be released on September 29 via Mascot Records. The opus will be available in white solid vinyl, limited edition vinyl boxset, CD and digitally.

Earlier this year, BLACK STONE CHERRY released the album's lead single, "Out of Pocket", which went on to be a crowd favorite on the band's recent U.K. arena shows.

The Kentucky-based band, featuring Chris Robertson (lead vocals/guitar),Ben Wells (guitar/backing vox) and John-Fred Young (drums/backing vox),are joined for the first time on an album recording by Jewell. The band's fanbase will be more than familiar with Steve, as he has been touring with BLACK STONE CHERRY since 2021.

"Screamin' At The Sky" features all-new material written collaboratively while on tour, but when it came time to record, BLACK STONE CHERRY decided to try something it's always dreamed of doing: tracking an album at The Plaza Theater in Glasgow, Kentucky — a legendary 1020-seat venue built in 1934 that boasts meticulous acoustics.

BLACK STONE CHERRY's last album, "The Human Condition", released in October 2020 was their sixth consecutive No. 1 debut on the U.K. Rock Albums chart. The album's lead single, "Again" was the band's biggest single in over 10 years in America, peaking at No. 15, and their highest-charting record ever in Canada, landing in the Top 15. The album racked up 50 million streams worldwide. Over the years, BSC has both headlined and rocked 12,000-cap arena shows and shared the stage with a wide range of superstars, including ALTER BRIDGE, DEF LEPPARD, GOV'T MULE, NICKELBACK, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, BAD COMPANY, MÖTORHEAD, HALESTORM, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, THE DARKNESS and ZZ TOP. In 2018, BSC performed in front of 100,000 people at the Download festival as main support to GUNS N' ROSES and in 2021, the band played the venerated Royal Albert Hall, immortalized on 2022's live DVD "Live From The Royal Albert Hall…Y'All".

EXHUMED Announce 25th Anniversary Edition Of Gore Metal Album, Available Physically In October And Streaming Now

Gore metal maniacs, Exhumed, announce the 25 year anniversary deluxe reissue of their legendary debut album, Gore Metal. Fully remastered audio of the original mix by Arthur Rizk (Kreator, Cavalera, Power Trip, and more), Gore Metal now features expanded artwork, live tracks (digital only), and liner notes.

The 25th anniversary edition of Gore Metal is streaming in full now. Physical pre-orders are out October 27 on LP/CS. Pre-order here, and listen on all streaming services here, and below.

Frontman Matt Harvey comments: “Like a lingering recurrent infection, this album just keeps rearing its ugly head. Twenty-five years is a long time for a record this raw, nasty, crude and repugnant to hang around, so what better time would there be than now to reissue it on vinyl? The re-master has breathed new life into these dusty old tracks and the record has never sounded better. I hope you necromaniacs are as excited about this as we are, because we have a bunch of plans around this reissue and anniversary in the works. If you've been hoping for a chance to hear some deep cuts and (slaughter)cult classicks... your patience will soon be rewarded.”

CULTURE CLUB's BOY GEORGE Attends NAPALM DEATH Concert In Australia: 'My Ears Are Still Ringing'

CULTURE CLUB's BOY GEORGE Attends NAPALM DEATH Concert In Australia: 'My Ears Are Still Ringing'

Glamour icon Boy George of one of the biggest global acts of the '80s, new wave, pop legends CULTURE CLUB, is apparently a fan of British grindcore pioneers NAPALM DEATH.

The 62-year-old singer, whose real name is George Alan O'Dowd, took to his Twitter on Wednesday (September 13) to share a short video of NAPALM DEATH's September 12 concert at The Triffid in Brisbane, Australia, and he wrote in an accompanying message: "Saw the noise monsters @officialND last night and my ears are still ringing. Loved all of the stuff [NAPALM DEATH frontman] Barney had to say. Totally tight band (no other way of saying it, lol) Hey Barney see you at the coffee counter! Comment of the night 'shut up you fresh faced fucker'".

Boy George is currently celebrating CULTURE CLUB's four-plus-decade with a "Greatest Hits" tour of Australia. The musician, whose flamboyant dresses and heavy makeup created a disarmingly androgynous appearance that was a sensation on early MTV, is joined by guitarist Roy Hay and bassist Mikey Craig as they perform favorites from across their back catalog. The tour kicked off on September 5 at Perth's RAC Arena, before shows at Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena and Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena on September 8 and September 9, respectively. The tour continued with a show at Adelaide Entertainment Centre on September 11 before wrapping up on September 14 at Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

NAPALM DEATH is a British-American extreme metal band formed in Meriden, West Midlands, England, in 1981. While none of its original members remain in the group, the lineup of vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway, bassist Shane Embury and drummer Danny Herrera has remained consistent for most of the band's career.

NAPALM DEATH is credited as pioneers of the grindcore genre by incorporating elements of hardcore punk and death metal, using a noise-filled sound that uses heavily distorted, down-tuned guitars, grinding overdrive bass, high speed tempo, blast beats, and vocals which consist of incomprehensible growls, or high-pitched shrieks, extremely short songs, fast tempos, and sociopolitical lyrics.
