Negură Bunget have released a video for "Brad" ("fir tree") as the first single taken from the Romanian black metal pioneers' final album and conclusion of their Transylvanian trilogy, which is entitled Zău ("Old God"). Zău is slated for release on November 26. The "Brad" video can be found below.
Zău is the legacy of drummer and mastermind "Gabriel "Negru" Mafa, who tragically passed far too early at the age of 42 years on March 21, 2017. This album has been completed and respectfully created upon Negru's original drum-track recordings by the last lineup of Negură Bunget.
"After the tragic passing of Gabriel 'Negru' Mafa we all felt compelled to fulfil his legacy according to his ideas and wishes, which meant that we had to complete the Transylvanian trilogy", writes the band collectively. "Working on this album, we all felt Gabriel's guiding presence among us. We all knew the details directly from him, because as the very organised person that Gabriel was, he had written everything down. The drums that you hear on Zău are played by Gabriel as he had already recorded the pilot for the album before his passing. The rest of us just contributed with our parts as usual, although it was a difficult time and process for all of us. We missed the musical and philosophical debates with Gabriel. In the end, we succeeded to complete his work. The title of the third part of the Transylvanian Trilogy Zău means 'Old God' in Romanian but it also designates a wonder. This album focuses on Transylvanian landscapes, mythology, and spirituality. 'Brad', which translates as 'fir tree' represents the most cinematic track of this album. The symbolism of the fir tree in Romanian traditional culture is vast and complex. For example, it can represent immortality and the circle of life as it accompanies all the important stages: birth, marriage, and death. Our friend, the artist Daniel Dorobantu created the stunning video for this song."
Martin Koller adds: "In many ways, Zău is unlike most other albums", writes the label's founder. "We felt it important that this record would be released in the 25th anniversary year of Prophecy Productions as it somehow felt that this would add to the special tribute we intended it to be to the late Gabriel 'Negru' Mafa. He spoke so many times about the Transylvanian trilogy and how much it meant to him that we knew, we had to get it right. It was so very important to Gabriel, it had become very important to us, his label family. We want to honour all those years of friendship and fruitful collaboration with this posthumous release. We are therefore beyond grateful from the bottom of our hearts for the band to be able to finish what they had started with Gabriel: A stunning testimony of the innovative power and musical creativity of Negură Bunget. We also want to express our deep gratitude towards everybody else, not at least Gabriel's wife Alina, who helped in the making of this amazing record and its artwork. We are glad that we will make it happen before this year is over and we sincerely hope, you will come to love Zău as much as we do."

Legendary artist and studio maestro, Alan Parsons, has announced the release of a new live album, entitled The NeverEnding Show: Live In The Netherlands, on November 5. The release showcases the performance that the Alan Parsons Live Project held at the Tivoli in Utrecht, Netherlands on May 5, 2019.
The band was, as usual, in fine form and fed extra energy by an enthusiastic audience. An amazing performance by quite possibly the definitive band lineup of exemplary musicians that Alan has toured with. Knoxville, Tennessee death metallers WHITECHAPEL will release their new album, "Kin", on October 29 via Metal Blade Records.

At this stage in the game, the name WHITECHAPEL commands respect. Already sitting on one of the most enviable catalogs in contemporary metal, in 2019 they dropped "The Valley", showcasing a confident evolution in their sound and standing as a true landmark release that sets a new standard for the genre.
"To me, it was like the stars aligning for us to create our almost perfect record in regard to songwriting, vocal performance, the mix and master, and the artwork," says guitarist Alex Wade. "We like to look at our albums as chapters of our career, and that is one chapter I will never forget. I think it really solidified that we can embrace a new sound, and if we execute it properly, then the fanbase is going to support and enjoy it."
In 2021, WHITECHAPEL returns with that album's successor, the mighty "Kin", which is an even more dynamic and diverse collection, further advancing the band's sound into new territory without losing sight of what brought them to this point.
"I feel with every album, we learn what worked best on the last one and try to utilize that in our writing," adds vocalist Phil Bozeman. "Early in the writing, there was some discussion of the album being like 'The Valley' part II, not literally called that, but in how the songs sound and flow through it. It's very much a storytelling type record like 'The Valley' was. Musically, we just want to create what we vibe with at the given moment. We write music with how we feel and not what is expected of us, while lyrically the idea of continuing from the story of 'The Valley' was always the goal."
The resulting record explores a lot of sonic and emotional territory, and for the first time, it could be said that a WHITECHAPEL record is as much a rock album as it is a metal one, an assertion Wade agrees with.
"It's still very much a metal album, but there are elements of the record that have more of a rock and open vibe," he says. "We really wanted these songs to breathe and have life and to sound bigger than anything we've made so far. We have explored more singing on 'Kin' too. It wouldn't make sense to have the majority of the fanbase enjoy that sound and then shy away from it." This is not to say that the band have lost their hardest edges, with the full-on death metal assault that kicks off both "Lost Boy" and "To The Wolves" as brutal and serrated as extreme metal gets, and while Bozeman explores his wide-ranging singing voice more, he also cuts loose with his trademark roar across the album's eleven tracks.
Tracking of "Kin" was predominantly done at guitarist Zach Householder's home studio with producer Mark Lewis producing his fifth straight WHITECHAPEL album, making for a very comfortable working environment.
"Creating records with [Mark] has an effortless flow to it, and we can track things pretty quickly and efficiently these days," says Wade. "Mark has a great ear for giving us unique and complementary guitar and drum tones for the songs we are trying to record." The tracks were then sent off to David Castillo at Ghostward Studios in Sweden for mixing, with Ted Jensen mastering it in Nashville, Tennessee. Now, having another album they can be as proud of as its predecessor, it stands them in good stead as they look toward the future. "I see more growth and a limitless potential," says Wade. "I think we found a great formula on 'The Valley', and we used that to create another monumental record for our career that I can't wait for people to hear. We hope to continue to grow our fanbase with this new album, and always seek to move in a positive direction. I'm excited as the pandemic lessens for the touring world to come back to life and to be able to perform these massive songs we have created in the manner they were meant to be heard — live and loud."
Former Delain singer and songwriter, Charlotte Wessels, is gearing up to release her first solo endeavour, Tales From Six Feet Under, out September 17 via Napalm Records. Below is a live performance of the song "Afkicken" featuring her former Delain bandmate, Timo Somers.

Unable to perform live due to the pandemic, Wessels spent most of last year buried in her Six Feet Under home studio, writing, performing and producing an eclectic wealth of songs. Tales From Six Feet Under offers her favorites out of the bunch. All instruments and vocals on these ten intimate and honest songs were performed or programmed by Wessels herself - except for the exciting collaboration with Alissa White-Gluz on the haunting track "Lizzie" - showcasing the multifaceted nature of Wessels, including her exceptional ability to express the most sincere feelings and emotions within her art.
Charlotte Wessels states: “In May 2020, I started releasing a song every month on Patreon as an outlet for my surplus of music, and tracks I wrote that didn't fit my band. The year that followed was an absolute roller coaster, from living through a global pandemic to closing a chapter so dear to me. It shows through these songs, made right here in my Six Feet Under home studio. Producing these songs with the support of a wonderful community has been a lifesaver during such turbulent times, and I'm happy to bring them out of the basement and into the world with this release. Let me tell you the Tales From Six Feet Under.”
Tales From Six Feet Under is an electrifying collection with gems ranging from melancholic indie pop to synth-infused rock. The record features Wessels’ rendition of Goth classic “Cry Little Sister”, as well as a beautiful synergy of the stunning voices of Charlotte Wessels and Alissa White-Gluz on “Lizzie”. It also debuts a song in Wessels’ native language with the Dutch rocker “Afkicken”. The mesmerizing and haunting “Victor” was released in April this year along with a visually palpable music video. “Soft Revolution” showcases the artist right where the magic happens; in her Six Feet Under studio. The song - part sweet sorrow, part soaring call to action - is quickly becoming a fan favorite.

On November 5th, blackgaze masters MØL return with their second studio album, Diorama, the group’s first for their new label Nuclear Blast Records. Recorded and mixed by Tue Madsen (Gojira, Meshuggah, Heaven Shall Burn) and graced by a cover artwork designed by Jon Gotlev, Diorama sees the band further developing its captivating, aggressive sound. Inspired by bands like My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Drop Nineteens, Lantlôs and Alcest, MØL released their self-titled debut EP back in 2014. A year later they perfected their sound with their second EP "II", produced by Jacob Bredahl and released in 2015. Both EPs were well received and drove them on to do some emphatic live shows which were praised by press. In 2018, MØL made an international breakthrough signing with Holy Roar Records (UK) who released their debut album 'Jord' to critical acclaim. METALLICA has released a demo version of Jason Newsted's original bass instrumental containing ideas which were later incorporated into the song "My Friend Of Misery" from the band's self-titled 1991 album, better known as "The Black Album." "My Friend of Misery (From Jason's Riff Tapes)" is taken from the "Riffs & Demos" 2CD included in the remastered deluxe box set of "Metallica", due on September 10 via the band's own Blackened Recordings.
"Metallica" producer Bob Rock told Music Radar about the recording of "My Friend Of Misery" in a 2011 interview: "The song is all about a mood, which is very cinematic in feel. METALLICA know how to play to their strengths, dishing out raw power, but on this song we went for more of an atmosphere. It's ominous, and it works. It started out with [Jason's] intro, so a big part of working on this track was spent developing a great riff into a song that would take flight and really go places. Which it does — it builds and builds quite nicely."
"My Friend Of Misery" is the sole track on "Metallica" on which Newsted gets a co-writing credit. During his time with the band, he was also credited on two other METALLICA songs: "Blackened" and "Where The Wild Things Are".
Newsted told Billboard magazine he was thrilled to finaly get a chance to make a substantial contribution to METALLICA's songwriting process. "That was a moment where those guys kind of bowed and said, 'Here you go, man, put your song on there,' being the guy who came up with that," he said. "As opposed to being part of the team, I got to be myself for a minute there, which was a real accomplishment."
The 58-year-old musician left METALLICA in 2001 after a 15-year run with the group. His exit was documented in the band's 2004 documentary, "Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster", which followed the members of the group through the three most turbulent years of their long career, during which they battled through addiction, lineup changes, fan backlash, personal turmoil and the near-disintegration of the group while making their "St. Anger" album.
Newsted was METALLICA's third bassist, following Ron McGovney and the late Cliff Burton. Robert Trujillo took over in 2003 after Newsted's exit.
Spirit Adrift guitarist/vocalist Nate Garrett comments, "On March 1, 2020, I relocated to the woods outside of Austin, Texas. Two weeks later, everything was locked down. I turned to the thing that has helped me navigate difficult situations for most of my life: writing music. I wrote and demoed a ton of songs over the course of the pandemic. The songs on this E.P. are the best of the bunch. Marcus, Preston, and I recorded these in March of 2021 at Homewrecker Recording Studio with Ryan Bram at the helm. Zeuss handled mixing and mastering, after lengthy discussions about Martin Birch, Tom Allom, Crowbar, and how important it is to carry forth the essence and spirit of heavy metal. Special thanks to our friend Cody Davis for the brilliant title." He continues, "These songs, and this band, represent persevering through difficult times, staying true to your innermost self, and celebrating the life-affirming power of metal."

Drott is comprised of Arve Isdal (Enslaved), Ivar Thormodsæter (Ulver) and Matias Monsen and hails from Bergen in the west coast of Norway. With their varied musical background ranging from metal and jazz to classical music, they create the genre which can only be described as Drott. Inspired by forces of nature, superstition and spirituality the trio explores light within darkness through their music.
The group, recently established (2020), released their self-titled EP in March 2021 and received great reviews. It established the Drott’s instrumental progressive rock sound as a breath of fresh air in the genre. Their first full-length, Orcus, takes Drott in a new creative and artistic direction. From Las Vegas to the world. Velvet Chains was formed in the well-known American city in 2018 by experienced musicians from the American circuit. The musical proposal bets on contagious rock sounds, a solid rhythmic section, and catchy guitar and voice melodies, the kind that stick in your head.
The music of the quartet is a mixture of musical styles and personalities through the cultural exchange: both Jerry Quinlan (voice and guitar) and Noelle Schertzer (drums) are American, Laurent Cassiano (guitar) is Brazilian and bassist Nils Goldschmidt, leader of the project, is Chilean.
Guided by what was best done in the grunge and hard rock of the 90s and 00s, the music of Velvet Chains has as reference groups such as Guns N' Roses, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam, among many others from different styles, whose elements are condensed to create a unique and characteristic sound. The mix of styles and nationalities have always had an excellent record in the history of global music; as in The Strokes, Ill Niño, or even Slayer, who, including two Latinos in their initial line-up, managed to leave a mark in metal history.
All the artistic wealth of this mix of origins and influences will be condensed and presented to the public on September 24, when the group releases their debut album, Icarus.
To celebrate this important milestone in her career, Velvet Chains will feature guest artist contributions to some of her songs. For example, guitarist Richard Fortus (Guns N 'Roses) recorded the guitars on the single "Tattooed". Listen to it on all digital platforms here, and watch the music video below.
The lyrical content along with the musical quality is another important factor for Velvet Chains: "Our goal was to write songs with important lyrics while covering different genres within Rock from the 90s to the 00s. You will find a bit of heavy rock, a bit of grunge, a bit of alternative rock, and much more on this album”, explains Nils, founder of the band.
The first single "Tattooed" was released on July 30. “He talks about how to deal with extremes in relationships and mask the pain that comes from that,” they explain. The song is accompanied by an impressive music video, produced and directed by renowned music video director Dean Karr (Marylin Manson, Iron Maiden, Velvet Revolver, etc.), who conceived the entire narrative of the video, which brings together very intense scenes, which are mixed with the impressive sound of Velvet Chains.
The second single released today on all digital platforms is called “Strangelove”, written from a collaboration between Nils and Drew: “It's about a unique attraction/love that would never work because it borders on obsession. It will probably have a very positive radio reception, as it has a super catchy beat, and it has even become one of our favorite songs to play live,” concludes Nils. Listen here and below.
Velvet Chains' debut album Icarus was co-written with multiplatinum songwriter Drew Lawrence. Recordings took place in early 2021 at different studios: drums were recorded at The Hideout and bass was recorded at The Tone Factory, both in Las Vegas, while guitars and vocals were recorded at The Killroom in Seattle. Sound engineering work was carried out by Greg Williamson, while Tristan Hardin did the mixing and mastering.

Creative Norwegian rock outfit, Leprous, have released their new single, "Nighttime Disguise", off their new studio album Aphelion, which was released August 27th worldwide via InsideOutMusic. Check out the video for new single "Nighttime Disguise" below.
Following up on 2019’s Pitfalls album, Leprous recorded Aphelion throughout the last year at three different studios: Ghost Ward Studios in Sweden, Ocean Sound Recordings in Norway and Cederberg Studios in Norway. The album was once again mixed by Adam Noble (Placebo, Biffy Clyro, Nothing But Thieves, etc.), mastered by Robin Schmidt (The 1975, Placebo, The Gaslight Anthem, etc.) and its front cover artwork - designed by Elena Sigida, based on photography by Øystein Aspelund - can be seen below.
Next to the jewelcase CD and digital versions, Aphelion will also be available as limited edition Mediabook CD (with expanded booklet) and as Gatefold 2LP+CD with two bonus tracks: "A Prophecy To Trust" and " Acquired Taste" (Live 2021).

The clip below features Alex Skolnick (Testament), Rody Walker (Protest The Hero, Tanner Wayne (In Flames), Emily Lee (Shearwater), Devin Shidaker (The Acacia Strain), Samantha Mobley (Frozen Soul) and Jordan Olds aka Gwarsenio Hall shredding their way through the Toto classic "Hold The Line".
"Hold The Line" is taken from Toto's 1978 eponymous debut studio album. It was released as the band's debut single and became a huge hit, reaching #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #14 on the UK Singles Chart.
Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro once described the song as follows:
"'Hold the Line' was a perfect example of what people will describe as your heavy metal chord guitar licks, your great triplet A-notes on the piano, your 'Sly'-hot-fun-in-the-summertime groove, all mishmashed together with a boy from New Orleans singing... and it really crossed over a lot of lines."
Coming off their sophomore album, Emerald Seas, Seven Spires are set to return with their third, and by far, most ambitious album to date, Gods Of Debauchery, on September 10.

On the album, the band says: "There is a ton of influence from video games, films, and TV soundtracks such as Skyrim, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Lucifer, Pirates of the Caribbean, Marvel films, and many more, plus our love for classic Kamelot, Dimmu Borgir, Fleshgod Apocalypse, and Late Romantic Classical Music. The most important part of making art is staying true to yourself, and we unapologetically did exactly that, which meant exploring every corner of what we love about music, and constantly pushing the technical limits of our own musicianship."
After the release of Emerald Seas in February of 2020, the band had multiple amazing support slots lined up to promote the record on the road. They were geared up and in fighting form, ready to bring their music to the masses and show the world what they are all about. Plans were quickly changed weeks after the album' release due to the coronavirus pandemic though and soon it became obvious that touring would be ground to a halt for a while. So, the band took the opportunity to commence work on their follow-up album, which wound up becoming the mammoth 70+ minute masterpiece that is Gods Of Debauchery. This album, epic in scope and reach, shows progression well beyond their years.

The Indian old school metal institution Kryptos returns with the sixth studio album, Force Of Danger, out October 1 via AFM Records. New rager, "Hot Wired", is streaming below. Preorder at the AFM webshop.
