THE HALO EFFECT's NICLAS ENGELIN: Streaming Has Made Music More DisposableIn a new interview with Metallerium, former IN FLAMES and current THE HALO EFFECT guitarist Niclas Engelin lamented the fact that physical copies of music are dying out, making music seem more disposable.
"I remember back in the '80s when I started embracing heavy metal and all things heavy metal, DIO was coming out with the album 'Sacred Heart' [in 1985] and I was maybe in the sixth grade or something like that," he recalled (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET). "And they had this single out, 'Hungry For Heaven' — an amazing single. I bought the physical single with the bonus track on the B-side. And we had to wait until September for the album to come. That was the magic behind it, because you were playing the single back to back throughout the whole summer, and then the album drops the same day when we started school again. I remember this. And then at the same day, we saw a big poster, 'DIO is coming to Gothenburg in November.' 'My God. We've gotta buy the tickets.' And that was the magic about that. And you can only read it in magazines, maybe hear some snippets of some songs on the radio and maybe some interviews with [singer] Ronnie [James Dio] or [guitarist] Vivian Campbell or some member of the band. And that was the magic behind that. You had to think about it, 'Maybe they are living like this.' 'Yeah, he's living in a castle.' 'He's a knight.' We were making up stories within the mind and between your friends, and we were waiting for it. And that created a special magic, a special moment, because when the album hit the shelves, you were there, first-day buyer, buying the album and go home and just listen to 'Sacred Heart'. … That's magic. And today's society is totally different. I can look at my kids when they're playing music. 'Yeah, I love this artist.' 'What's the name of the song?' 'Eh, I don't know. Number five is good. And number seven.' They don't know. They don't care. 'Give me the song.' It's another thing nowadays. … You don't take the time to dive into the music. I mean, buying your favorite album, coming out of the store, holding it in your hand — whether it's CD or vinyl — you were, like, 'I need to get home straight away.'"
As previously reported, THE HALO EFFECT's "Days Of The Lost" recently entered the official chart in Sweden at position No. 1. It was believed to be the first time a debut album from a metal act had ever topped the chart in Sweden in its first week of release. "Days Of The Lost" also landed at No. 6 in Germany.
In addition to Engelin, THE HALO EFFECT features four other former members of IN FLAMES — Jesper Strömblad (guitar),Daniel Svensson (drums),Peter Iwers (bass) and Mikael Stanne (vocals).
"Days Of The Lost" came out on August 12 via Nuclear Blast.
THE HALO EFFECT's first-ever tour will be as the support act for Swedish death metal giants AMON AMARTH and U.S. metallers MACHINE HEAD on 31 dates throughout Europe in the summer and fall of 2022.
Engelin has been sitting out IN FLAMES' tour dates for the past three and a half years but has never officially confirmed his departure from the band. Engelin's replacement for IN FLAMES' live shows since then has been former MEGADETH and current ACT OF DEFIANCE guitarist Chris Broderick.
Svensson, who joined IN FLAMES in 1998, announced in 2015 that he was leaving the group to focus on his family life.
A member of IN FLAMES since 1997, Iwers issued a statement in November 2016 saying that he was exiting the band "to pursue other endeavors."
A founding member of IN FLAMES, Strömblad quit the band in February 2010 in order to continue receiving treatment for his alcohol addiction. 39

CASUALTIES OF COOL Vocalist CHÉ AIMEE DORVAL To Release Solo Album In November; "Blood Red Son" Single / Video Streaming"Blood Red Son" is the first single from vocalist Ché Aimee Dorval's foerthcoming album, The Crowned, to be released by Icons Creating Evil Art in November 2022. Pick up the single here. Watch the official video below.
Dorval is best known in rock and metal circles as one half of Casualties Of Cool, the country rock project launched by Devin Townsend in 2012. Dorval also toured with Townsend as part of his live band for the Empath album, released in 2019, and recorded vocals for a few of his Quarantine Project single released during the pandemic. Dorval also appears on Townsend's forthcoming Lightwork record.
Ché Aimee Dorval: "The video for Blood Red Son is a fever dream of indecision, regret and resolve. It’s about the moment you realize you have a choice to make, and all the different conflicting emotions that compete for space in your head while doing so. That’s the important bit though. However chaotic and difficult the choice may be, it’s essential for people to have the ability to make it for themselves. When I wrote this song and made this video, the right to that choice, though constantly under attack, still seemed set in stone, at least in my country. Now, as I watch the world stride backwards I’m realizing more and more that we can’t take these things for granted. Freedom over our bodies is not a given."
Ché Aimee Dorval was raised in Vancouver by her mother, a plethora of hippie Aunts, punk rock Uncles and a colourful extended family. Think Little House on the Prairie meets the Lost Boys. Ché's childhood was one of constant creativity and adventure, instilling in her a strong sense of individualism that she took out into the world and onto the stages of local clubs in Vancouver. She lived the troubadour life and became embroiled in the Toronto indie music scene. As she grew and spread her wings, music took her around the world, both as a solo artist and with her critically acclaimed band Casualties Of Cool, a joint venture with prog behemoth Devin Townsend, who she recently collaborated with again by featuring on his latest album Lightwork alongside Nile Rodgers.
The nomadic lifestyle led to her working in LA with hitmakers Greg Wells, David Foster and Kara Dioguardi; performing with Michael Bublé, Kim Churchill and Dan Mangan and releasing music with industry heavyweights Andrew Loog Oldham (Rolling Stones) and Tom Sarig (Lou Reed).
"Blood Red Son" is the first single to be taken from her forthcoming album, The Crowned. As Ché gears up for its release, we find her at her most ambitious and gregarious. It shows a side to her seldom seen before. Confidence and determination pulses through the songs, signalling the birth of a new era for Ché. Inspired by her love of Trip Hop, Folktronica and Soul, The Crowned has Ché’s signature all over it whilst reaching out into new sonic environments.
Pre-pandemic, Ché was working with Bob Rock, who produced half of the album. When we emerged from lockdown, Ché had self-produced the rest. This album tells a story of an artist’s evolution and growth.
Stay tuned for updates.

GOJIRA's JOSEPH DUPLANTIER On SEPULTURA: 'They Are A Very, Very Important Band In The History Of Metal'On September 2, GOJIRA guitarist/vocalist Joseph Duplantier was interviewed on Brazil's "Multishow" after the band's appearance at the Rock In Rio festival in Rio De Janeiro. Asked if he remembers the first time he heard the Brazilian metal band SEPULTURA and how much of an influence SEPULTURA has been on GOJIRA's early sound and style, Joseph said: "I do remember the first time I heard SEPULTURA, and it blew my mind literally — not literally [laughs], actually. But I was blown away. And we were in a time in our development as people, in our teenage years, where this sound fueled something in us and inspired us to start what we're doing today.'
He continued: "The first [SEPULTURA] album I discovered was the album 'Arise'; it was very death metal. And then what they did after that, the 'Chaos A.D.' and the 'Roots' album, redefined metal, really. So I think they are a very, very important band in the history of metal."
A year and a half ago, Joseph commented on the fact that some people have compared GOJIRA's new song "Amazonia" to SEPULTURA's "Roots" album. Asked how much of an influence SEPULTURA has been on GOJIRA's sound, Joseph told Cuartel Del Metal: "How much? From one to 10? A solid seven, whatever that means. I could say 10 also, because I love them so much. But SEPULTURA is massive in the history of our band, for some reason. I discovered 'Arise' first, and I was pretty blown away — it was so dark and so fast and so technical. It was right after I discovered the band DEATH and MORBID ANGEL, and then SEPULTURA. And I was absolutely blown away by their craft. And then, I had a few bands in high school, and I started to get together with my brother. We were playing at home, sometimes after school, and then we decided to form our own band. We dropped our other bands, got together, and 'Chaos A.D.' came along. And we were absolutely blown away — absolutely blown away. And [it was] easy to play too — it's simple riffs. They stripped down everything to the core… I mean, oh my God. They said it all with this album."
As for what he thinks when people compare "Amazonia" to SEPULTURA, Joseph said: "I go, 'Yup.' And it's a compliment, and there is no shame here. And we ripped them off, but we didn't do it on purpose. But we realized it right after. We were, like, 'Oh, that sounds like SEPULTURA. Ahhh, whatever.' It's a tribute to SEPULTURA — how about that? It's about Brazil. It's about the Amazon. It's tribal."
"Amazonia" is taken from GOJIRA's latest album, "Fortitude", which came out in April 2021 via Roadrunner Records. The follow-up to 2016's "Magma" was recorded and produced by Joseph Duplantier at Silver Cord Studio — GOJIRA's Ridgewood, Queens, New York headquarters — and mixed by Andy Wallace (NIRVANA, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE).
Proceeds from "Amazonia" are benefiting the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) who advocate for environmental and cultural rights of indigenous tribes in the Amazon who have suffered immensely — victims of deforestation, land loss, forced labor, violence, and harassment.
GOJIRA initially laid the foundation for "Fortitude" in 2020 with the surprise release of the 2020 single "Another World".
The artwork for "Fortitude" was created by Joseph Duplantier. 1

DAVE MUSTAINE Explains Why He Lashed Out At JUDAS PRIEST's Road Crew: 'I Was So Mad'MEGADETH frontman Dave Mustaine says that he "was so mad" when JUDAS PRIEST's road crew began soundchecking while his band was performing at a Spanish festival last month.
Barcelona Rock Fest is staged at the Parc de Can Zam in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, just 20 minutes from the center of Barcelona. The festival revolves around two identical main stages set up side by side (Stage Rock on the left and Stage Fest on the right). The format is meant to eliminate the classic festival dilemma of having to choose between two bands that are playing at the same time, enabling artists to play almost continuously one after the other throughout the day. While one band is playing on one stage, the crew prepares the other stage for the next act.
After MEGADETH played the sixth song of its set on July 2, "Trust", a visibly annoyed Mustaine stopped the show in protest of the crew on the other main stage which was getting ready for PRIEST's performance later in the night.
"We'll wait till he's done checking his guitar over there," Dave said into the microphone.
After a long pause during which he apparently flipped the bird at the crew member in question, Mustaine continued: "The last night of the tour — we went all the way to the last fucking night, and then some pussy over on the stage next to us has to start playing while we're playing. How fucking pathetic, amateur piece of shit you are."
After another brief pause, Dave said: "Can we proceed now?" and then muttered under his breath, "Fucking cunt."
"This is called 'Symphony Of Destruction'," he added before he and his bandmates launched into the song.
Mustaine addressed his onstage rant during an hourlong interview he gave to TalkShopLive earlier this month to promote MEGADETH's upcoming album, "The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!". He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "Recently I had an outburst onstage, and it was one of the only ones I've had in years. And it wasn't because somebody did something and I just reacted. It was the third time something had happened to us, and by the third time it happened, I just said 'enough.'
"We were in Belgium, [at the] Graspop [Metal Meeting festival]. And WHITESNAKE's road crew thought it was okay to soundcheck during our set," Dave explained. "Talk about amateurs. Then DEEP PURPLE did the same thing a couple of days later at Hellfest [in France]. More amateurs. I know the band wouldn't have done that. And then the last time it happened, on the very last show of the tour, the crew for JUDAS PRIEST did it. And I lost it. I almost went over there and said something to the guy's face because I was just burning hot; I was so mad."
Mustaine clarified that he didn't hold the WHITESNAKE, DEEP PURPLE and JUDAS PRIEST bandmembers personally responsible for the way their crews behaved at the above-mentioned festivals.
"There are two ways to look at this here," he said. "Total unprofessionalism on the part of the crews and on the part of the stage managers, the production managers at those festivals.
"Do I think the promoter did it? No, I don't think the promoter did it. Do I think the bandmembers did it? No, I don't think so. In fact, we just finished a tribute song we were working on for JUDAS PRIEST, and if I thought the band did it, I would have stopped doing the song.
"A lot of these [crew] guys, they go out on the road and they don't get paid very well," Mustaine noted. "So they drink, they smoke, they do whatever — some do, some don't. But you find the people that don't do that, those are the ones that are the professionals; they know not to do that.
"Do I hate these people? No. Was it uncool? Yeah. Do I forgive 'em? Totally. But it still was one of those things."
It's not clear whether the members of JUDAS PRIEST were even aware of the circumstances that led to Mustaine's rant. The Rob Halford-fronted outfit played shortly after the end of MEGADETH's set, with guitarist Glenn Tipton — who has been sitting out PRIEST's touring activities after going public with his Parkinson's disease diagnosis in 2018 — joining his bandmates for the encore. 7

COREY TAYLOR Explains Title Of New SLIPKNOT Album, 'The End, So Far'Corey Taylor has once again shot down the rumor that SLIPKNOT will break up after the release of the band's next album.
Ever since SLIPKNOT announced the title of its upcoming LP, "The End, So Far", in July, speculation has been rife that the name is a reference to the fact that the LP will mark the end of the band's recording career.
Taylor, who turned 48 last December, addressed the rumor during an appearance on this past Tuesday's (August 30) episode of SiriusXM's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk".
He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "People have been talking about the end of SLIPKNOT since 2003, so it doesn't really matter. If I had a nickel for every time I've had to straighten fans out, I'd have a shit-ton of nickels, let's put it that way.
"Nothing sells albums like drama, let's put it that way, and even drama that doesn't even come from us; it just comes from the fans," he continued. "But at the same time, I kind of started saying onstage… explaining what the title is. It's the fact that it's… It's the end so far, which just means it's the end of one era and the start of the next.
"If you look at all of our favorite bands — [IRON] MAIDEN, METALLICA, [BLACK] SABBATH; you can even talk about JUDAS PRIEST; all these bands that we grew up on, loving; and our friends in ANTHRAX as well — every one of those bands has had different eras in their career; it's never been a straight line," Taylor explained. "There's no through line except for the members. And every era comes to a natural end and then it's the next one. So that's what the title reflects."
Asked by host Eddie Trunk if he believes that each era in a band's trajectory usually corresponds to a major lineup change, Corey responded: "I do, but at the same time, you can still have the end of one era and the beginning of another with the same bandmembers. So, to me, it can be a reflection of the fact that you have different members or you're just moving in a different direction. For me, it's more about just letting the fans know that we will be back and to remind them that you just never know what you're gonna get with us."
Taylor continued: "I mean, every album has always felt different; it's always sounded different. And to me, I feel like this era is more about us dealing with the grief that we've had to deal with and now kind of getting to the point where we can now move on comfortably into the future, and it's not about that. It's a part of our history now; it's not our narrative. And now we can kind of move on and kind of see what the future holds for SLIPKNOT, musically where we can go now. Because of the way we've done things, we've set it up so we can go in any direction we want, and as long as it comes from the heart, it doesn't matter. So that's kind of the era, I think, that's being set up now. The next era will definitely be more of like a 'gloves off, let's just see what happens and go for it.'"
In the past, Taylor has repeatedly hinted that he would quit SLIPKNOT if he ever felt that he wasn't able to perform up to a certain standard. During a 2016 appearance on an episode of the "Someone Who Isn't Me" podcast, Taylor was asked if he thought he would ever decide that he is "tired of touring." Taylor replied: "You know, honestly, if you'd asked me a year ago, I would have said no. But, I mean, just now… I'm just kind of starting to… I'm not young anymore. And as willing as my will is, I'm just beat up, man. I mean, I might as well be 60 in SLIPKNOT years, for Christ's sake."
He continued: "I don't know if I would retire. I might step away from SLIPKNOT at some point, just because the way the music is, and that sense of energy, I don't know if I could be able to do that into my fifties. And I would never want the band to feel like I was holding them back, because I just couldn't physically do it. So that means I wouldn't completely quit music; I would probably just step away from SLIPKNOT."
In a 2019 interview with the "Marshall Podcast", Taylor touched upon possible retirement, saying: "It's when you stop caring that you should stop. Period. Because you're not doing it for the same reasons that you started doing it in the first place.
"I talk to fans all the time and they're, like, 'What's your motivation for doing this?', and it's the same since I was 13. It's because I love doing this, I love doing music, I love making music, creating it.
"The money's gonna come and go. If I wanted to make money, there's a host of different jobs that I could do just to make money. This isn't about that; there's something deeper. I'm glad I get to make money doing this, but it's not about that for me, it's about the next one."
Asked if there had been moments where he lost sight of that bit, Corey said: "Only when I was drinking. And it wasn't because of the music. Like, I was still committed to the music, but I was so out of it that it took me out of myself, so I can't even include that because it wasn't me at the time. I also know that one of the things that I realized and what actually encouraged me down the road of sobriety was seeing how bad my voice was sounding, how bad my creative level was at. That was a huge piece in me, calling it a day on that shit."
In a 2018 interview with Music Universe, Taylor was asked about his bandmate Shawn "Clown" Crahan's assessment that the next SLIPKNOT album could be Clown's last. "We all kind of say that," Taylor explained. "I've said it in the past. We've always said — and this is not in a negative way — we've always said that when we get to the point where we physically can't do SLIPKNOT the way we want to do it, we'll stop. And for some of us, the years of being in SLIPKNOT have taken [their] toll. Cold mornings kick my ass. My neck, my knees, my hips… [DJ] Sid [Wilson] has broken every damn bone in his body. Clown, he's had his share of health issues and whatnot and physicality. We've all had an injury in this band — from our necks to our retinas. And honestly, if that was his decision, I wouldn't do SLIPKNOT without him — absolutely not."
He continued: "There's a certain mentality that goes into SLIPKNOT, and he started it. He's always been the vision for this band, for SLIPKNOT, and without that, it crumbles. So, yeah, if he left, that would be it for me as well. And I say that, honestly, in a very positive way, because none of us would want to continue doing it from a half-assed point of view. Nobody wants to go 50 percent on a SLIPKNOT album."
SLIPKNOT's seventh studio album, "The End, So Far", will be released on September 30 via Roadrunner Records. The follow-up to 2019's "We Are Not Your Kind", it will be the band's final record with Roadrunner after first signing with the rock and metal label in 1998. 1

12. Metal Heart

15. Balls To The Wall
16. I'm A Rebel
As previously reported, ACCEPT will embark on a North American tour in the fall. The trek, featuring support from NARCOTIC WASTELAND, will kick off on September 29 in Nashville, Tennessee and conclude on October 29 in Columbus, Ohio. Fans can expect a career-spanning setlist of new and classic tracks, including mega-hits "Balls To The Wall", "Princess Of The Dawn", "Fast As A Shark" and many more.
This past February, it was announced that ACCEPT had inked a worldwide deal with Napalm Records.
ACCEPT's latest album, "Too Mean To Die", came out in January 2021 via Nuclear Blast. The LP was the group's first without bassist Peter Baltes, who exited ACCEPT in November 2018. He has since been replaced by Martin Motnik. ACCEPT's lineup has also been expanded with the addition of a third guitarist, Philip Shouse, who originally filled in for Uwe Lulis during 2019's "Symphonic Terror" tour, before being asked to join the band permanently.
"Too Mean To Die" was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee with British producer Andy Sneap (JUDAS PRIEST, MEGADETH),who has been responsible for the studio sound of ACCEPT since 2010.
Mark Tornillo joined ACCEPT in 2009 as the replacement for the band's original lead singer, Udo Dirkscheider. He can be heard on ACCEPT's last five studio albums, "Blood Of The Nations" (2010),"Stalingrad" (2012),"Blind Rage" (2014),"The Rise Of Chaos" (2017) and "Too Mean To Die".
Last month, ACCEPT guitarist Wolf Hoffmann was asked in a new interview with Robert Cavuoto of Sonic Perspectives if he and his bandmates will enter the studio after their upcoming U.S. tour to begin work on a new album. He responded: "Well, the studio is basically my house, or the band house, in Nashville. But, yeah, I will go there and definitely start working seriously on songs. We're not quite ready to record because, quite honestly, we don't have finished songs yet. I've got a collection of stuff that I started to put together but it's at the very beginning stages. But, yeah, we wanna put out a new album as soon as we can, sure."
He continued: "I've also been dragging my feet quite a bit because it's been such a weird time with corona. You would think I had all this free time so I have dozens and dozens of songs ready to go, but the truth is I don't. I was sitting here basically like you sit at the airport. You get there, you wait for your flight, and 10 minutes before it's ready to take off, they tell you, 'Oh, there's an hour delay.' And you think, like, 'Okay. An hour, that's not so bad. There's not much time to do much anyhow, so let me just sit here and wait.' And then, when that hour is over, they tell you, 'Oh, by the way, it's gonna be another two hours.' Had you known all this upfront, you would have probably done something useful. But it was almost like 'hurry up and wait.' And that's how it felt, to me, with corona. And I thought, 'Well, in a couple of months the tour is gonna go on anyhow. So I'm not quite ready to work on new songs quite yet.' But had I known it was gonna be a long two-year break, I might have gotten my act together and jumped into it. And we had just done an album during corona, so we were arranging to tour with it and not start working on new songs already. Because I felt like, 'Hey, I just made a record. Give me a break, people. I wanna tour this album first. I don't really wanna work on another album.' And also I don't know that the world was ready for yet another album. I mean, come on."

JAMES LABRIE And MIKE PORTNOY Were Able To 'Move On' Past The 'Garbage That Went On For Years And Years'DREAM THEATER singer James LaBrie, who recently said that it was "great" to be back on good terms with the band's original drummer Mike Portnoy, discussed his relationship with his former bandmate in a new interview with Ibagenscast. He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "There comes a point in everyone's lives that you have to really consider what it is that you're… that monkey on your back, and you have to come to terms with it, you have to confront it, and you have to transcend negativity. So if you're carrying around something that just eats away at you, what good is it? And I think for Mike and I to come to terms with all that garbage that went on for years and years, I think it just got to the point that, 'Let's put this behind us. Let's move on to a more positive place and be the better for it.' And I think that's basically what it came down to.
"Mike and I, we stay in touch once in a while by texting, 'Hey, what's up?' and all this stuff, and it's cool," he continued. "And the fact that he's going out with John [Petrucci, DREAM THEATER guitarist] on [John's] solo tour [this fall], they're gonna have a lot of fun. Yeah, the fans are pretty excited about it.
"Life moves on," LaBrie added. "It took a while, and I think if you talk to a lot of people in life, you realize that there have been these contentious moments that it seems to linger for far too long. And fortunately, we were able to come to terms with it and move past it and move beyond it. So it's all good."
Portnoy attended DREAM THEATER's concert on March 4 at Beacon Theatre in New York City. It was the first time he witnessed his former bandmates perform live since his exit from the iconic progressive metal outfit more than 11 years ago.
According to DREAM THEATER fans who attended the show, LaBrie gave Portnoy a shoutout from the stage and Mike waved. Several fans also took pictures of Portnoy at the venue, with Mike and his wife reportedly watching the performance from near the Beacon Theatre soundboard.
The next day, Portnoy shared a few backstage photos from the concert and he included the following message: "After 36 years, I finally got to see my 1st DREAM THEATER show last night! It was a wonderful evening and it was such a pleasure to spend time with my old friends again".
Portnoy, who co-founded DREAM THEATER 37 years ago, abruptly quit the band in September 2010 while on tour with AVENGED SEVENFOLD. He has since been replaced by Mangini (ANNIHILATOR, EXTREME, STEVE VAI).
Portnoy was a guest on Petrucci's second solo album, "Terminal Velocity", which was released in August 2020 via Sound Mind Music/The Orchard. The effort marked the first time Petrucci and Portnoy recorded together in over a decade, as well as their first time playing together since Portnoy departed DREAM THEATER.
This past May, LaBrie was asked in an interview with Loaded Radio if there was any chance of him and Portnoy working together again. He responded: "I think anything is possible. Listen, Mike and I are in a great place. We've been texting back and forth from time to time. I wished him a happy birthday; he wished me a happy birthday… So we're staying in touch.
"Listen, Mike's a great musician," LaBrie continued. "Put it this way… Who knows what the future holds? Maybe there'll be a day and I'll go, 'Holy shit. This track would be perfect to have Mike do this.' Or it might be something that comes from him, from his side. So we'll see. You know what? I'm open. And that's the thing, is that we're in a really good place now. And yeah, it should have happened a long time ago. But human beings, we have a tendency to… our pride gets the best of us."
In a 2017 interview with Rockhok, Portnoy insisted that had "no longing to reunite" with DREAM THEATER but said that he would return to his former band "for the fans." He explained: "The ball's in their court, to be honest. I have no longing to reunite with them; it's not something I necessarily am looking to do or want to do. I'm very content with all the eighty-seven bands I currently have going, so it's something I need. But I would do it for the fans, because I'm a very sentimental person and I have a lot of great, fond memories of those guys and the times. I'm a sentimental guy, so I would never close the door on it. So, really, the ball's in their court, honestly. [But] if you're asking me the odds [of a reunion happening], I would say, don't bet on it, because I know their personalities as well and I don't think they're the type that are looking backwards."
A couple of years ago, Portnoy told Loud that he left DREAM THEATER because he wanted to expand his musical horizons. "[I didn't] want to go to my grave and just be the drummer from DREAM THEATER," he said. "I knew there was way more to what I had to offer."
Since the 2010 departure of Portnoy, Petrucci, along with keyboardist Jordan Rudess, has taken on much of the songwriting load for DREAM THEATER, including 2016's controversial double concept album, "The Astonishing", 2019's "Distance Over Time" and the band's latest LP, 2021's "A View From The Top Of The World".

Hear OZZY OSBOURNE's New Song 'Nothing Feels Right' Featuring ZAKK WYLDERock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee and Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Ozzy Osbourne has shared a new single, "Nothing Feels Right", featuring his longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde. The song is a reflective, moody ballad, with Wylde delivering an emotional, melodic solo. The track is featured on Ozzy's upcoming album, "Patient Number 9", which will arrive this Friday, September 9.
It was announced in April 2017 that Wylde would be rejoining Ozzy's backing group for all his future solo show dates. Osbourne's touring lineup also includes Rob "Blasko" Nicholson on bass, Tommy Clufetos on drums and Adam Wakeman on keyboards.
Wylde originally joined Osbourne's band three and a half decades ago and backed the legendary frontman from 1987 to 1995, then again in 1998, from 2001 to 2004 and also from 2006 to 2009.
Zakk did not appear on the legendary heavy metal singer's last LP, 2020's "Ordinary Man".
To celebrate "Patient Number 9", Ozzy has confirmed a special in-store appearance and signing at Fingerprints Music in Long Beach, California on Saturday, September 10, the day after the LP's release. Attendees will need to pre-order a copy of "Patient Number 9" to attend the event as Ozzy will only be signing copies of the new album. In order to sign as many copies as possible, the new album will be the only item signed. Masks will be required for all attendees and no photos with Ozzy will be permitted. Click here to reserve your copy.
Produced by Andrew Watt (who handled the same duties on "Ordinary Man") and set for release on Epic, the new album marks Osbourne's 13th solo studio album. It's heavy, it's hard-hitting, it's historic — it's everything you'd want from an Ozzy Osbourne record and maybe more.
"Patient Number 9" was written by Ozzy, Watt, Robert Trujillo (METALLICA),Chad Smith (RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS) and Ali Tamposi and features a riveting solo from legendary guitarist Jeff Beck (one of the notable guest stars on the album; additional details below). The video marks the first collaboration from the project with McFarlane. It is highlighted by McFarlane's signature illustrations interspersed with live Ozzy vignettes in the role of "Patient Number 9," which the revolutionary creative force in the world of comics and toys also filmed. In addition, this is the first-ever video to incorporate Ozzy's artwork: his hand-drawn demons were animated and can be seen during the Jeff Beck solo in the song.
Working with producer Watt for the second time, Ozzy welcomed a dynamic A-list supporting cast. The record boasts guitarists Beck, Eric Clapton, Mike McCready of PEARL JAM, and longstanding righthand man and six-string beast Zakk Wylde who plays on the majority of the tracks. For the bulk of the album, Chad Smith of RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS held down drums, while the late Taylor Hawkins of FOO FIGHTERS made an appearance. Old friend and one-time Ozzy bandmember Trujillo plays bass on most of the album's tracks, with Duff McKagan of GUNS N' ROSES and Chris Chaney of JANE'S ADDICTION supplying bass on a few songs. For the first time ever, BLACK SABBATH co-founder, guitarist and riff lord Tony Iommi appears on an Ozzy solo album.
An exclusive version of "Patient Number 9" with a limited-edition special McFarlane-designed comic book is available for preorder; a limited-edition comic with foil cover is also available with a special deluxe box.
Ozzy has sold over 100 million records, is one of a handful of artists who has had Top 10 albums in last six decades, received induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a co-founder of BLACK SABBATH, won three Grammy Awards, earned the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors, set a Guinness World Record, and claimed real estate on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk Of Stars. He's played for royalty (even the Queen of England) and dignitaries around the world, interacted with presidents and performed to millions of devoted fans on five continents. Earlier this year, Ozzy's CrytoBatz NFT launched as one the biggest Celebrity NFT project ever created; it's currently ranked in the top 100 biggest NFT projects ever and is valued at over $40 million.

ROBB FLYNN Explains Why MACHINE HEAD Stopped Playing Festivals For Eight YearsOn August 12, MACHINE HEAD played a surprise set at this year's Bloodstock Open Air festival at Catton Park, Walton-on-Trent, United Kingdom. Three members of MACHINE HEAD — frontman Robb Flynn, bassist Jared MacEachern and drummer Matt Alston — who were in the U.K. rehearsing for their upcoming European tour, played a secret mid-afternoon set on the Sophie Lancaster Stage at the long-running festival. Polish guitarist Wacław "Vogg" Kiełtyka couldn't join MACHINE HEAD at the show because he was scheduled to perform with DECAPITATED at Czech Republic's Brutal Assault festival the same day.
One day after MACHINE HEAD's surprise appearance at Bloodstock Open Air, Flynn spoke to Oran O'Beirne from Bloodstock TV about the performance and MACHINE HEAD's return to the festival stage. He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "To me, music is so much about a connection — it's about making a connection with people. That's always the goal with what we're doing. We stopped playing festivals for eight years. That was my first festival in the U.K. in 10 years. And I stopped doing festivals 'cause I didn't feel that connection with the audience anymore and I just needed to get my break from it.
"Obviously if every festival was like yesterday, I'd be like, 'Fuck yes! This is fucking sick,'" he explained. "I mean, it was insane — just insanity levels of fucking mayhem. It was incredible. But you've also gotta do the festival circuit. That's what people don't realize. You've gotta go to Serbia [and] you've gotta go to Budapest.
"I was just talking to Chuck BillyandGary Holt from EXODUS and TESTAMENT yesterday, and they're, like, 'Dude, we've been out here for eight weeks. I'm done.' They're just frazzled. And they still have 10 more days here. And they're just, like, 'I just wanna go home. I'm fucking sick of it.' And I get it — I get it, man. It's fucking hard — it's really hard doing the festival circuit.
"And so… I don't know. Never say never," Flynn added. "But for now, all that matters is that we did an awesome show yesterday, and that was it."
MACHINE HEAD's setlist at Bloodstock included one song from the band's latest album, "Of Kingdom And Crown", which was released on August 26 via Nuclear Blast/Imperium Recordings.
Back in 2018, Flynn told U.K.'s Independent that he "hated" playing festivals. "The last festival we ever did I just wanted to get offstage as soon as possible," he explained at the time. "It was pouring with rain, I was freezing my fucking ass off, there's water getting in all our gear, everybody's there in their parkas standing in a foot of fucking mud and I'm just thinking, 'When did metal become this?' It sucks for us and it sucks for the people standing out there watching us. Don't get me wrong, there are some great festivals out there that create their own culture and their own vibe and I love that. But there's a lot of festivals out there that are just thrown-together bullshit and you can't afford to not do those ones when you're out on the circuit; that's the shit that grinds you down."
According to Flynn, he "just didn't feel any connection with the people" MACHINE HEAD was playing to on the festival circuit. "We've done festivals for 23 years but we got to a point where we had to try something else," he told Independent four years ago. "Just because it worked for us 15 years ago or 10 years ago or even 5 years ago, it doesn't mean it's going to work for us now. Everything's changing at such a rapid pace; I've been in the music business for 32 years and I've never seen as much change as we've had in these last five years. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I'm not saying it's a good thing but it is what it is and we've got to constantly re-evaluate and ask ourselves what's right for us. Believe me, we're making way less money and we're playing to way less people than we would be if we were playing a festival, but if that connection between us and our audience isn't there, then there's no point in us even being there. We might be playing to 3,000 people instead of 30,000 but those 3,000 people are losing their fucking minds and I feel this unbelievable bond when that happens. That's the sole reason why I do this, to feel that connection and that sense of release that unites us all."
The follow-up to 2018's "Catharsis", "Of Kingdom And Crown" includes the three songs that were featured on last year's "Arrows In Words From The Sky" single: "Become The Firestorm", "Rotten" and "Arrows In Words From The Sky". Much of the new MACHINE HEAD album was recorded at Sharkbite Studios in Oakland, California with engineer/producer Zack Ohren.
Back in December 2021, drummer Navene Koperweis (ANIMALS AS LEADERS, ENTHEOS, ANIMOSITY) joined Flynn, MacEachern and Ohren at Sharkbite Studios to jam on the final tracks for "Of Kingdom And Crown" and add some finishing touches to the songs.
MACHINE HEAD will team up with Sweden's Viking metal overlords AMON AMARTH for a co-headline "Vikings And Lionhearts" European arena tour in September and October. Support on the trek will come from THE HALO EFFECT, the new band featuring five former members of IN FLAMES: Peter Iwers, Daniel Svensson, Jesper Strömblad, Niclas Engelin and Mikael Stanne.

Four months ago, AEROSMITH announced that singer Steven Tyler had entered a treatment program following a recent relapse, prompting the band to put their Las Vegas residency on a temporary hold.
When AEROSMITH announced Tyler's return to rehab in late May, the band said in a statement that the 74-year-old underwent foot surgery in preparation for the group's return to the stage, and in managing his pain, suffered a relapse.
AEROSMITH said at the time it was canceling the June and July dates of the "Deuces Are Wild" residency, which was slated to begin at Dolby Live at Park MGM on June 17.
Tyler had been struggling with drug and alcohol addiction since the mid-1980s. Over the course of the last four decades, he had relapsed several times, including in the early 2000s and 2009.
In June, AEROSMITH drummer Joey Kramer's wife Linda Gail Kramer died at the age of 55. No cause of death has been revealed.
This past March, Joey announced that he would sit out AEROSMITH's concerts in 2022 so he can "focus his full attention on his family during these uncertain times," according to a statement from the legendary rockers. While Kramer "takes a temporary leave of absence" from AEROSMITH, he will once again be replaced by his drum tech, John Douglas. "[Kramer] and the band look forward to his future performances with AEROSMITH," the statement added.

THE HU Share “Bie Biyelegee” Video, Rumble Of Thunder Available NowHailing from Mongolia, The Hu have combined traditional music and instrumentation performed in their native language using native instrumentation with Western modern rock stylings to create a unique and catchy sound they have labelled as “Hunnu Rock.” The acclaimed rock outfit have today, September 2, unleashed their anticipated second official studio album Rumble Of Thunder via Better Noise Music alongside the music video for the track “Bie Biyelegee.” In this lively video, The Hu can be seen dancing in the traditional Mongolian style of “biyelgee.”
“’Bie Biyelgee’ is about having a good time,” share The Hu. “We danced like we never danced before during the video shoot and the movements where we tried to imitate biyelgee were very challenging. The biyelgee movements require a different skill set than you would find in any dance genre so in that way, celebrating these qualities are fascinating and inspiring to us.”
The Hu are currently touring in support of Rumble Of Thunder across the U.S. alongside Five Finger Death Punch and Megadeth until October 15, after which they finish off the year with a headlining run throughout Europe and the U.K. Earlier this year, The Hu hopped across the globe on their “Black Thunder” tour which included stops at Coachella (USA), Fuji Rock Festival (Japan) and headlining shows all over North America, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.
Five Finger Death Punch’s Zoltan Bathory shared his thoughts on the band via Instagram, “The Hu is out on the road with us - great band from Mongolia - you gotta check them out. I’m a Hun, so from the anthropologic perspective they are my cousins.”
Across its 12 tracks, Rumble Of Thunder connects the world to Mongolian culture and its unique core values of natural preservation and spiritual connection with the earth. These core values are on full display in the album along with deeply meaningful lyrics that uplift Mongol people, as the band wishes for prosperity and peace among all. The band shared the eco-conscious debut single, “This Is Mongol,” in May which has since received over 3 million video views and over 1.6 million Spotify streams. In July, they revealed an epic action-packed music video for the first half of their nine-minute track “Black Thunder” before sharing its second equally tantalizing sequel in mid-August.
"‘Rumble of Thunder’ extends the variety of songs that the Hunnu Rock genre has and focuses on bringing new playing techniques that would sound unique and add more hard rock components to the songs,” The Hu state. “It was quite fun to record and most importantly, we had so much time to play and choose the best versions. Creative space and time are crucial, so we are very grateful to our friends and families who had our backs during the lengthy process. We also feel very much in sync in terms of understanding and complementing each other during performance. You will find that we have become an even closer unit in this album with many new surprises.”
Rumble Of Thunder is available to order here.

Norway’s TONIC BREED Takes Listeners For A “Little Fairy Tale” With “Blood Moon” VideoNorwegian one-man thrash Tonic Breed's latest music video is setting a "Blood Moon" in support of their latest EP Fuel The Fire unleashed this past July. The EP includes guest appearances from Dirk Verbeuren (Megadeth), Bernt Jansen (Artch/Wig Wam), Björn Strid (Soilwork), Martin Skriubakken (Endezzma), and Oliver Palotai (Kamelot).
"Paradoxically the most played Tonic Breed song to date, despite the musical contrast from earlier releases. This song is a more layback melodic piece that takes the listener for a little fairy tale," adds Tonic Breed's Patrik K. Svendsen.
Tonic Breed was established in 2006 as a full-on thrash quartet that abruptly disbanded in 2019. With much thought by founding member Patrik K. Svendsen, he decided to take the reins to reinvent the band and keep its candle burning for its next release as part of its new chapter. The outcome is now a one-man thrash army led by Svendsen with support from metal friends to give metalheads raw, energetic hard-hitting thrash, with melodic and groovy elements.
The four-track EP was recorded over 18 months with multiple sound engineers from different countries, along with various guest musicians. When asked what fans can expect from this next evolution of Tonic Breed, Patrik K. Svendsen answered:
"I believe the EP will not disappoint the Tonic Breed fanbase. The starter songs are right up there in the alley they would expect. However, some new elements here and there might cause disagreements. Blood Moon would be one of those. This melodic piece was a result of my experimental phase. One of four songs I recorded from that time, and Blood Moon was the only one making the cut. After listening to the release, I believe one impression the listeners will have is that there is a significant difference between the songs. For some, maybe too much. Personally, I like that kind of dynamics."
Fuel The Fire is available on all digital platforms.

GRAVE DIGGER – Symbol Of Eternity Lands At #7 On German ChartsGrave Digger’s new studio album Symbol Of Eternity has landed at #7 on the German charts. Out now via ROAR! Rock Of Angels Records, the metal force’s last album, 2020’s Fields Of Blood, hit at #17 after its first week of release on the German charts.
Grave Digger issued Symbol Of Eternity on August 26. Check out lyric video for "Heart Of A Warrior" below:
Grave Digger have been an integral part of the German heavy metal scene for over four decades. Chris Boltendahl, Axel Ritt, Jens Becker and Marcus Kniep are not only a force to be reckoned with in the live sector, they also regularly deliver high-quality heavy metal albums.
On their latest album, Symbol Of Eternity, they continue to spin the story of the Crusaders... after having dealt with it once before on the album Knights Of The Cross, they devote themselves once again to the fabled history of the Templars.
Razor-sharp riffs, opulent choir arrangements and the distinctive voice of Chris Boltendahl are components of Grave Digger's new work. All the trademarks that have made the band stand out for four decades can be heard on the album... an original and hard album is "Symbol of become eternity". And yet, next to the merciless riffs, like in the opening headbanger "Battle Cry", melodic refrains are always in the foreground... hard double bass attacks alternating with mid-tempo songs and the almost doom-like title track will make every headbanger's heart beat faster.
Grave Digger have never been so varied and are not afraid to think outside the box like on the bonus track "Hellas Hellas" which is a cover of the Greek superstar Vasilis Papakonstantinou in which Chris sings Greek for the first time in his career and the band was even able to win Vasilis himself for some vocal passages. Open your ears and eyes when the new album will be in stores worldwide on August 26, and you can take another journey into the secret world of the Templars... The king is dead... long live the king!

TANKARD Issue “Lockdown Forever” Single, Music VideoFour decades into their liver-destroying, gut-stretching, thrash rampage, there's still no stopping the Tankard beer train. Just in time for the festivities surrounding their 40th birthday, Tankard prepares to let their eighteenth album, and debut for the new label Reaper Entertainment, Pavlov's Dawgs, off the leash on September 30th.
The third single from Pavlov's Dawgs, "Lockdown Forever," deals with the Coronavirus pandemic and the related isolation in lockdown in a Tankard-typical way. The official video for the song was filmed and edited in July 2022 under the direction of Renatus Töpke (Töpkefilm.de).
Vocalist Andreas "Gerre" Geremia,, "Today we are releasing our third video clip for our new opus Pavlov`s Dawgs... For the very first time we worked together with Renatus Töpke and we had the opportunity to shoot at the locations where the legendary science fiction comedy Iron Sky was made! Not only because of that, I think the result of ‘Lockdown Forever’ is more than worth seeing (and of course hearing)! Imagine, there is such a blatant virus that forces you to stay at home forever! Locked up for the rest of your life you can only order pizza, do yoga, and listen through your metal collection from A-Z! The latter would be no problem for me of course, I'm well stocked… in this sense: Not only ‘Lockdown Forever’ but also ‘metal forever!’”
The taps are polished, the Freibier is flowing, and Tankard are finally back to what they do best five long years after their last studio album: Thrashing madly, drinking thirstily, and ever so cleverly intertwining metal, humor, and sarcastic social commentary into one big raucous ball of entertainment.
Pavlov's Dawgs, which was recorded and produced at Gernhard Studio Troisdorf together with producer Martin Buchwalter, will be available on CD, vinyl in various color variants, limited earbook with previously unreleased pictures from the last 40 years of Tankard, and as a limited box set which includes two demos on cassette.

MANTIC RITUAL Launch Music Video For New Track "Life As Usual"Mantic Ritual have released a video for "Life As Usual", the opening track on their new 6-song EP, Heart Set Stone, now available on CD, limited edition cassette and for streaming/download at all digital platforms. Order here.
A message states: "The 'Life As Usual' video was shot entirely on 16mm using a non-sync Bolex. For film fans, yes, this means all footage is entirely analogue for this video. Editing was very tedious because there is no audio playback reference, and even more difficult, older 16mm cameras do not shoot in time (and we did not have access to a crystal sync Bolex). The original raw footage constantly swayed between slight fast and slow motion with no predictable regularity. Being off even one frame makes a big difference, so strategic cuts and frame dropping got us as close as possible. Still, it's not perfectly in sync like most videos today, but we hope you'll dig it nonetheless."

SNAKECHARMER Feat. Former WHITESNAKE, BLACK SABBATH, WISHBONE ASH Members To Release 4CD Anthology Box SetBritish hard rock supergroup, Snakecharmer, was formed in 2013 by former members of Whitesnake, Wishbone Ash, and Thunder. The resulting lineup is a veritable who's-who of classic hard rock: vocalist Chris Ousey (Heartland), guitarist Laurie Wisefield (Wishbone Ash), drummer Harry James (Thunder), keyboardist Adam Wakeman (Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath live), and guitarist Micky Moody (Whitesnake).
Given the band's pedigree, it was inevitable that the music would sound like good-time, classic melodic hard rock with a blues edge, their eponymous debut was released in 2013 by Frontiers. The response from fans and critics alike was rapturous, and the band toured to wide acclaim.
In 2015, Moody left the band, replaced by young Irish-born virtuoso Simon McBride. Snakecharmer's follow up album, Second Skin, arrived in 2017.
This 4CD box set collects the bands two studio albums as well as two live shows from Milton Keynes which show the band at work in a live environment, the booklet has notes by Classic Rock's Dave Ling talking to the band about their career as well as newly mastered studio albums done by Tony Dixon.

Liv Jagrell has been in the spotlight in the last few months. Now, it is time for a second digital single, “King Of Fools”.
"This song is the first song we wrote for the new album, back in 2020 when we all realized that it would take a bit before the live scene would return”, Liv Jagrell comments about “King Of Fools”. “I had some idea of releasing a single here and there, but it didn't planned out that way in the end, we decided to write a whole record instead”.
A new Liv Sin album is expected to be released in 2023. Watch the previously released video for "The Process" below:

The Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concerts ticket and merchandise sales will benefit charities chosen by the Hawkins family: Music Support and MusiCares.
As one of the most respected and beloved figures in modern music, Taylor's monolithic talent and magnetic personality endeared him to millions of fans, peers, friends and fellow musical legends the world over. Millions mourned his untimely passing on March 25, with passionate and sincere tributes coming from fans as well as musicians Taylor idolized. The Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concerts will unite several of those artists, the Hawkins family and, of course, his FOO FIGHTERS brothers in celebration of Taylor's memory and his legacy as a global rock icon — his bandmates and his inspirations playing the songs that he fell in love with, and the ones he brought to life.
Hawkins was found dead at the Four Seasons Casa Medina hotel in Bogota.
An official cause of death for Hawkins hasn't yet been released. But on March 26, Colombia's attorney general's office released a preliminary toxicology report, saying that medical examiners found evidence of 10 types of substances in Hawkins's body, including opioids, benzodiazepines, marijuana and antidepressants.
Hawkins joined FOO FIGHTERS in 1997. Prior to that, he played with the Orange County band SYLVIA and was also in the backing band for Sass Jordan. He also toured with Alanis Morissette as her drummer.
Hawkins was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame last year as a member of the FOO FIGHTERS.
Hawkins's most recent work with FOO FIGHTERS included last year's "Medicine At Midnight" album, a collection of BEE GEES covers and FOO FIGHTERS' horror film "Studio 666".

DESPISED ICON Celebrate 20th Anniversary With Rarities EP, DéterréMontreal deathcore OG’s, Despised Icon ,are celebrating their 20-year anniversary via a special rarities EP, entitled Déterré.
Déterré means ‘Unearthed" in French. This is exactly what the latest release from Despised Icon is. The EP consists of five old-school songs dating back to 2004. It seemed fitting to remaster and re-release these early recordings to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the band, which took form in 2002.
Déterré is out October 28 worldwide via Nuclear Blast Records.
Despised Icon's Alex Erian comments, "2004 was a definitive year for Despised Icon. After switching from drums to vocals and recruiting Alex Grind behind the kit, we started experimenting more and more, blending various elements of death metal and hardcore together. Eager to get our name out, we played every show we could jump on and quickly recorded demo versions of 'Bulletproof Scales' and 'Warm Blooded'.
"After uploading both tracks to Myspace and mailing a few hand-assembled CD-R promo copies to labels, people were finally starting to notice. The next thing we knew, we were booked on our first US tour with Deicide and were in the studio working simultaneously on a split CD for Relapse Records and on our sophomore album The Healing Process for Century Media.
"Unearthed after 17 years and available on tape and 10” vinyl formats for the very first time, the 5 demo tracks on Déterré capture the energy and excitement of that era. We hope you enjoy this limited edition EP and look forward to sharing new music with you in 2023."
Déterré was recorded throughout 2004 by Yannick St-Amand at Wild studio for a few songs and drums at Studio Victor while guitars, bass, and vocals by J-F Dagenais at his home studio. The band produced the album and mixing was a joint effort between Yannick St-Amand; and Jean-François Dagenais. Alexandre Goulet created the artwork for the EP.

Watch: JOHN BUSH And CHUCK BILLY Perform ANTHRAX And TESTAMENT Classics With METAL ALLEGIANCE At ROCK IN RIO 2022METAL ALLEGIANCE performed last night (Friday, September 2) at the Rock In Rio festival in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The band's setlist included music from METAL ALLEGIANCE's self-titled album, "Fallen Heroes" EP and "Volume II - Power Drunk Majesty", as well as a special batch of ANTHRAX and TESTAMENT covers picked just for this show.
In METAL ALLEGIANCE fashion, an all-star lineup performed in Rio De Janeiro, including core members Mike Portnoy (ex-DREAM THEATER) and Alex Skolnick (TESTAMENT),as well as Phil Demmel (VIO-LENCE, ex-MACHINE HEAD),Jack Gibson (EXODUS),Chuck Billy (TESTAMENT) and John Bush (ARMORED SAINT, ex-ANTHRAX).
Stemming from an initial idea in 2011, METAL ALLEGIANCE was born as a way to unite a collection of hard rock and heavy metal's most notable musicians in a setting born under one ideal, a love of music and performing.
Brought together by METAL ALLEGIANCE principal partner Mark Menghi, the project's original material came together from the creative minds of Portnoy, Skolnick and ex-MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson, alongside Menghi. The four writers then reached out through their metal rolodexes to a diverse lineup of performers, each adding their own personal musical stamp to the songs.
Regarding how the songs on METAL ALLEGIANCE's debut album came together, Skolnick told The Rockpit: "For me it all started with [MOTÖRHEAD's] MotörBoat [cruise in 2014], that official [METAL ALLEGIANCE] gig, because TESTAMENT was on the ship too and I was brought on board as a special guest for METAL ALLEGIANCE and we just hit if off. A few days later, they mentioned the idea of writing and working on some original tunes and then it just went so well, it happened really fast. And I think while the four of us were writing the tunes — me, Mark, Dave Ellefson and Mike Portnoy — we were discussing certain types of voices but we never specifically decided on a specific voice until after the songs were completed and we had a chance to talk to people that we had in mind to sing them. We played them the song, discussed schedules [and whether this] can even work logistically, and it came together very naturally."
Back in April 2019, Ellefson said that one of the keys to METAL ALLEGIANCE was writing "really compelling music," which allows him and his bandmates to be more selective when it comes time to determine which guest vocalists will be singing on their songs. In an interview with Global AZ Media, Ellefson was asked why METAL ALLEGIANCE doesn't follow the traditional band format and prefers to use guest vocalists instead. He responded: "To just go out and play some cover songs, which we had been doing with METAL MASTERS for a couple of years and the first METAL ALLEGIANCE show, technically that was on the Motörboat cruise, but we're all original artists and we're songwriters and we all have record deals and that's what we've grown up knowing as professionals. I think when Mike Portnoy, we go to his house in Pennsylvania and write an album, we were all down for it, meaning the 'core four.' That's what really defines you as an artist, is to write and create together. The fact we come from these different genres — I'm a thrash/rock guy; Skolnick is a jazz/thrash guy; Portnoy is a prog musician and Mark Menghi, we didn't really know what he was because he was our friend, but he brought in this kind of mid-tempo PANTERA, BLACK SABBATH swagger that really none of the other three of us weren't doing. It was such a collaboration between us and the fact we wrote really compelling music — first we write songs, then we think about who we want to have singing it. I think we're doing it the right way, because it's always about the music and the friendship, then it's about adding the other people to contribute. This isn't something where we sit around and go, 'Wouldn't it be great if we could get all of these famous guys? Oh yeah, then we need to write some songs.' I think we do it the right way and the two albums we put out, the two albums and the EP, have really been based on really writing great music and then, from there, getting the right voice. I'll look at inviting John Bush to sing on the song 'Bound By Silence'. You get Max Cavalera [SOULFLY] to collaborate with us on 'Voodoo Of The Godsend'. It's really about having the right pieces of the fabric, not just having someone who is famous."

Watch: SEPULTURA Performs 'Roots Bloody Roots' With Brazilian Symphony Orchestra At ROCK IN RIO 2022 FestivalOn Friday (September 2),Brazilian/American metallers SEPULTURA performed with the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira (Brazilian Symphony Orchestra) at this year's edition of the Rock In Rio festival in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Video of their appearance can be seen below.
In an interview with the "Pollution Nocturne" radio show conducted at this year's Plane'r Fest on July 2 in Rhône-Alpes, France, SEPULTURA frontman Derrick Green was asked when fans can expect to see a follow-up to the band's 2020 album "Quadra". He responded: "It's really difficult to say what we'll do for the next album because we're just starting to tour for this album. So there's quite a bit of touring we need to do this year, till the end of the year, and then next year as well before we even start to think about going in the studio again. So I think our focus is really based on touring right now for 'Quadra'."
As for how it feels for him and his bandmates to be back on the road after a two-year pandemic-related break from touring, he said: "It feels great to be back. To play live music is everything to us; it really is a big part of our lives. And being away from it for so long was strange at first, but I think it made us stronger in a lot of ways. We were able to determine what we really enjoy in life, what we take note of what really matters in our lives. So that break actually helped in ways. Now being here playing, it feels unbelievable; it feels like something that was missing but now it's back; that piece that was missing is now there again."
In June, SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser left the band's European tour due to what was at the time being described as a "family emergency." A couple of weeks later, it was revealed that Andreas's wife had died after a year-and-a-half battle with colon cancer. He was temporarily replaced on the road by Jean Patton of fellow São Paulo, Brazil-based heavy metal act PROJECT46.
SEPULTURA comprises Kisser, Green, bassist Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr. and drummer Eloy Casagrande.
SEPULTURA was formed in Belo Horizonte by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera, who are no longer with the band. 6
