Dimitris Kontogeorgakos of the Chicago-based webzine Metal Kaoz recently conducted an interview with legendary rock singer / songwriter Graham Bonnet (Alcatrazz, MSG, Rainbow) and talked about the creation of Alcatrazz's most recent record, Born Innocent.

Bonnet was asked if he reached out to Yngwie Malmsteen to contribute to Born Innocent: "No, (laughs) and that’s because I know him. I know he’s very, very busy and he wouldn’t want to. I remember him saying, 'I don’t want to go back, always go forward'. And that’s OK with me. Maybe one day he might play in this band or with my band or some other band, I don’t know. Right now, he’s doing things completely on his own. So, good luck to him. He’s still a great player and a great musician."

Asked if he thinks that reactivating Alcatrazz is “going back”, Bonnet replies: "Sort of, yeah because it is like going back to relive what we had in the first place. Because I think now by doing this album and what this album sounds like, is very much like we did on our very first album. It has that same feel but with a modern production, I think. And to go back to your question I will say that I’ve never left really. I’ve always been there because I’m still writing the same kind of songs and people who are in the band now know how I write songs and I know how they write, so it’s not really going back; it’s going forward but at the same time using elements of the past."

Born Innocent is their first studio venture since 1986’s Dangerous Games. Virtuoso Japanese guitar maestro Nozomu Wakai - a new invitee to the party- similarly wrote and played guitars on the double-kick steel-plated Irish warrior ode "Finn McCool", while Steve Vai wrote "Dirty Like The City". Meanwhile, "Something That I Am Missing" and "Warth Lane" were written by - and feature the guitar work of- Italian six-string hero Dario Mollo, with Riot bassist Don Van Stavern playing bass on the title track, "Polar Bear", "Finn McCool", "London 1666", "Dirty Like The City" and "Paper Flags". Add D. Kendall Jones’ writing and guitar work on "We Still Remember" and even a quick solo by another new invitee to the Alcatrazz mega-sound, Annihilator's Jeff Waters on "Paper Flags" (the second one to be precise), and it’s clear that studio Alcatrazz 2020 is one giant piece of rock for sure.

Los Angeles-based industrial-fused metal band, Society 1, has debuted the latest video from their upcoming Black Level Six album, “Get Up Again". Watch below.

“This is the most positive song I've ever written,” says vocalist Lord Zane. “It's basically about getting up after getting knocked down, no matter how many times you may find yourself in less than desirable situations. Whatever happens, just keep getting back up to fight another day. I'm sure everyone right now is feeling somewhat destroyed and that's understandable. Things aren't easy. The point of the song is to say...take a breath, refocus then get up again and just keep going no matter what.”

“Get Up Again” is also available to stream via Spotify.

Directed by Zane, who heads up Lord Zane Productions, the company behind the lens for videos from Zakk Wylde, DMC (Run DMC), Static-X, John 5 and many more, “Get Up Again” is the first video to feature the current lineup of Society 1, despite touring and recording with the same lineup since the fall of 2019. Within weeks of getting together, the current incarnation of Society 1 had hit the road for the Static-X Memorial Tour and continued performing live until the night before lockdowns went into place.

“This line up came together fast and it just clicked,” Zane says. “It feels great to finally get the new line up in a proper video. We didn't have a lot of time downtime to do videos but now, due to the pandemic, we have all the time we need since touring is on hold. When we decided to create this, we just wanted to create a video that was very abstract and didn't really take place anywhere in reality. We figured, ‘Let's visually escape for this one.’ Everyone wants a little escape right now including us.”

Innovation, invention and intensity are all words that sum up Lord Zane. Through the peaks and valleys of Society 1’s career, Zane’s passion and staunch dedication to his art have never subsided. Society 1 has seen it all before and has a hunger riding within the seat of experience - still as dangerous but with focus and intensity matched only by wisdom.

Zane is backed by Russian drummer Zhenya Pro, one of the most recognized and demanded session drummers in his home country; bassist Jimmy Minj, who has spent two decades touring professionally; and Johnny Pilz, a well-known and respected guitarist from the Orange County scene.

Although the 13 tracks on Black Level Six, the sixth album from Society 1, are based on a conventional theme of recovering from heartbreak, Zane’s cutting-edge songwriting and lyrical mastery approaches the topic in the unconventional style for which Society 1 has garnered its reputation. Described as “very somber, but very delicate in a way – and sad and creepy all at the same time,” Black Level Six tackles not only pain and suffering but also the steps through recovery and the process of letting go.

Craft Recordings is set to reissue Between The Buried And Me’s acclaimed third album, Alaska, on vinyl. Releasing September 25 and available for pre-order today, the 2005 record features newly remixed and remastered audio by the group’s longtime collaborator, Jamie King, at Basement Studio. The double album will be sold across all major retailers, while a limited edition, pressed on marbled-red vinyl, can be found exclusively on Between The Buried And Me’s website. This special reissue of Alaska comes as the Grammy-nominated band celebrates 20 years together.

In the mid-2000s, the North Carolina five-piece had firmly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the hardcore scene. Their first two albums - 2002’s Between The Buried And Me and 2003’s The Silent Circus - had garnered the group an ardent fanbase, who appreciated their exceptional musicianship, sharp lyricism, and unique blend of progressive metal with cerebral math-rock.

Following the release of their critically acclaimed sophomore effort - which marked their debut with Victory Records - the young band underwent several personnel changes. They cemented their line-up with guitarist Dustie Waring, bassist Dan Briggs, and drummer Blake Richardson, who joined founding members Tommy Rogers (vocals, keyboards) and Paul Waggoner (vocals, guitars). With their band in place, Between The Buried And Me went into the studio with Jamie King and Matthew Ellard to record their third album.

Released in the fall of 2005, Alaska found the group continuing to challenge themselves, creatively and sonically. While Alaska was certainly a hardcore record at its foundation, it also featured a wider spectrum of musical styles and experimentation. Synths, jazz-inspired percussion, and even acoustic guitar lines punctuated the songs - especially on softer interludes like “Medicine Wheel” and “Laser Speed,” which closes the album. Highlights also include the epic opening number, “All Bodies,” title track “Alaska,” and long-time fan favorite “Selkies: The Endless Obsession.”

15 years later, Between The Buried And Me have enjoyed the opportunity to revisit Alaska - their first album to feature all five current band members. Dustie Waring echoed this statement: “Alaska has always been mega-special to us, as it was our first record with this line-up. I’m very excited for everyone to hear this album in the way that we originally envisioned it.”

Tommy Rogers also offered his thoughts: “The new mix has really reconfirmed how much I enjoy this album. The Alaska era was a huge turning point for the band, and I think this album now sounds how we originally intended it to. Hopefully, our fans will reconnect with the album in a new way like I have. Regardless, I’m extremely excited for the world to hear these songs!”

Dan Briggs chimed in as well, laughing that “this record was written while three of us were under 21 and only one of us was old enough to rent a car in any of the 50 states. We wrote it in Blake’s old bedroom in his parents’ basement and recorded it in Jamie King’s parents’ basement. Now it has been remixed in Jamie’s current basement and we are old and still playing in Blake’s parents’ basement.”

Blake Richardson also offered a moment of levity, adding, “I’m really excited for everyone to hear this record with a drum tone that doesn’t sound like the bottom snare mic was blasted to 500 percent.”

Often referred to as a “Thinking Man’s Metal Band,” Between The Buried And Me continue to push the boundaries of their musical and technical abilities, even as the  group celebrate their 20th anniversary together. Formed in 2000, the band has released nine studio albums, including 2007’s watershed Colors, The Parallax II: Future Sequence (2012), as well as 2015’s Coma Ecliptic - which not only peaked at #12 on the Billboard Top 200 (a career high for the band), but also garnered widespread acclaim. The group has launched countless sold-out headline tours and support runs with the likes of Mastodon, Opeth, and Coheed and Cambria. Most recently, Between The Buried And Me released a two-part studio album, Automata I and Automata II, in 2018.

Rosa Laricchiuta’s hard rock project, Black Rose Maze, are streaming the song, "Let Me Be Me", featured on the recently released self-titled debut. Rosa Laricchiuta is a singer, songwriter, and performer from Montreal, Quebec. After several years cutting her teeth with live shows, she auditioned for the third season (2015) of La Voix, Quebec's version of the popular TV show The Voice. Rosa had an instant connection with the legendary francophone rocker Éric Lapointe and chose him as her coach. Rosa showed a solid stage presence, with remarkable intensity and a voice so powerful it sent her straight to the Grand Finale where she shared the stage with Def Leppard, Kelly Clarkson, Jean Leloup, and her idol, Melissa Etheridge. She left a lasting impression as she won over millions of viewers who named her the new "it" female rocker of Quebec.

She then released one album in the Quebec market before beginning work on her first English language album in 2016. That album, Free, was released the following year and at the end of the year, she joined the popular American band Trans-Siberian Orchestra for their annual mega tour of the United States. Rosa was then brought to the attention of Frontiers by none other than fellow Trans-Siberian Orchestra bandmates and now label mates, Dino Jelusick (Animal Drive) and Jeff Scott Soto - who also makes a guest vocal appearance on the album.

Draconian have released their third single, “The Sacrificial Flame”, off their upcoming album, Under A Godless Veil, out October 30 via Napalm Records.

The second epos on Draconian’s new collection of hymns draws the listener deep into endless landscapes consisting of doomy guitars and heavy growls. The angelic voice of singer Heike Langhans accompanies the opus like a nightingale flying through dark woods, haunting the last lines of shimmering light somewhere at the end of the horizon. Along with an artful conceptualized lyric video, “The Sacrificial Flame” guarantees a complete immersion into the band’s essence, making it hard to emerge from this vortex of emotions in the end as it’s quite more tempting to just stay there forever.

Heike Langhans on “The Sacrificial Flame”: “This is definitely one of the heaviest songs on the album and reminds me of all the old-school riffs and moody atmospheres that got me into doom metal in the first place. A dark and confrontational anthem that stirs me inside and silently demands answers from all that is Archonic in this world. Also one of my favorite vocal performances by Anders on the album.”

Adrian Smith has opened up to eonmusic about his career, confirming that he has a new solo project on the way, and that he was in line for a spot in Def Leppard after the passing of guitarist Steve Clarke in 1991. Smith made the revelations during an in depth chat with the site about his book Monsters Of River & Rock.

During the extended chat, Iron Maiden's melodically-leaning player also reminisced fondly about early recording sessions with the recently departed Martin Birch, as well as recalling the session that led to recording Iron Maiden's epic "Stranger In A Strange Land".  

Adrian further talked about his guitar playing technique, saying; "My playing, I like to think, I try and feel stuff, and I like the space to play in it. I mean, I try to construct solos with a beginning and end, a little mad flurry, a melodic bit; that’s just the way I kind of think. I hear a solo in my head and then I work out how to play it, usually."

Going on to chat about an unnamed forthcoming solo project, the guitarist said; "I’m very excited about it, but I can’t say. I’m doing a lot of singing, but the person I’m working with, we’re sort of splitting the vocals. But that’ll be coming. I’m very excited about it, but I’m sworn to secrecy at the moment."

Finally, long-rumoured to have been in line for the job that eventually went to Vivian Campbell, Smith confirmed that he had been in contention for Def Leppard following the death of Steve Clarke in 1991. When asked if that really was the case, a tight-lipped Adrian replied; "Well, emmm… [long pause] I was, yeah. Yeah I was. I’m not sure… I want to write more books; that might be in my next one! [laughing] There’s whole story about that, there’s a whole story about that."

Monsters Of River & Rock: My Life As Iron Maiden's Compulsive Angler is the new memoir from Adrian Smith, to be released on September 3 via Virgin Books. Adrian tells us a bit about his forthcoming book in this new video:

“Back at the hotel, I sat back, glass of wine in hand, and studied the tour itinerary... Let’s see, Hartford, Connecticut... big carp in the Connecticut river... Montreal, smallmouth bass in the St Lawrence... Winnipeg, always fancied having a go for those big catfish in the Red river... and so on. The endless road and winding river...”

Adrian Smith, the legendary lead guitarist of 100-million-album-selling band Iron Maiden, is well known in the Maiden community as a fisherman, and a former cover star of coarse-fishing bible the Angler's Mail (biggest chub of the season, August 2009). In his first, very personal, riverside memoir, Monsters Of River & Rock, Smith takes us with him on his incredible journey, through the highs and lows of life on tour, and on the river-bank, as his fishing gear travels with him across the world.

Adrian got hooked on fishing as a child growing up in East London, plundering ponds and bomb craters on the Hackney Marshes for newts and sticklebacks and catching perch from the Grand Union Canal whilst on outings with his father. Things began to get more exotic when the young angling enthusiast grew up to become lead guitarist in one of the most successful rock bands in history, and started travelling the world playing to many millions of fans. But once a fisherman, always a fisherman. The gear went with him, the fish got bigger, the adventures more extreme.

Adrian Smith was born in Hackney, East London, on 27th February 1957. He joined Iron Maiden at the end of 1980. Adrian is the band member who has collaborated on the most side projects outside of Iron Maiden, as well as writing and recording a series of albums in the early '90s, before rejoining the band. Iron Maiden have sold 100 million albums, and tour the world playing to millions of fans. Onstage, Adrian uses Jackson and Gibson guitars. Offstage, he is an avid tennis player, however his main hobby is fishing. He takes his rod and gear out on tour with him wherever he goes. This is his first book.

Black Sabbath's Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler recently spoke with Metal Hammer and looked back on the birth of the band. Following is an excerpt from the interview.

Metal Hammer: "If the lunatics and prostitutes of mainland Europe embraced them, they were having a harder time convincing record companies back home to sign them. They were turned down by 14 labels."

Geezer Butler: “We were always told to go away and write ‘proper songs’ by the record companies, at least the ones who had the decency to say anything. Most of them would walk out halfway through the song Black Sabbath.”

Jim Simpson (first manager): “I knew a publisher, David Platts, who gave us £1,000 to record an album that we could take to labels to convince them to sign us. The condition was that we used a producer they had, Rodger Bain.”

Geezer Butler: “We got £100 each and spent the rest on the album. I bought a jacket and a stereo system so I could actually play records. Somebody broke into my flat and stole the stereo, so all I had to show for the first album’s payment was a jacket.”

Ozzy Osbourne: “We had no experience of anything except playing live. Jim Simpson just said to us, ‘On your way to catching the ferry over to Switzerland, stop off at [London studios] Regent Sound and record your album.’ It was almost an afterthought.”

Tom Allom (engineer on Black Sabbath): “I hadn’t seen the band, I had no idea what they sounded like, and I hadn’t heard anything like it before. I was completely mystified by it. But Rodger Bain completely understood what they were doing.”

Geezer Butler: “We treated it exactly like a gig – we set up the gear, put mics in front of the speakers and drums, and recorded the album.”

Tony Iommi: “It took a day to record. The next day was the mixing. Then we disappeared off Europe. We didn’t even listen to the album.”

Ozzy Osbourne: “When we got back from Switzerland, Jim said, ‘Come on, I’ll play you your finished album.’”

Jim Simpson: “We met at New Street Station in Birmingham and went to my house.”

Ozzy Osbourne: “It started with all this thunder and lightning – it blew my mind.”

Jim Simpson: “The record label had put the sound effects on afterwards. The band didn’t know anything about it. That was the first time they’d heard all that.”

Geezer Butler: “We only had one copy each. I was too apprehensive about showing my parents the album, as they were staunch Catholics and I was dreading that they would see the inverted cross in the gatefold sleeve. I’m not sure they ever saw it.”

Ozzy Osbourne: “My mum and dad put the album on the radiogram (a piece of furniture that combines a radio and a record player). After hearing it, my father turns to look at me and goes: ‘May I ask you something son? Are you sure you’re just drinking the occasional beer?’”

Widely regarded as innovators of the musical genre which came to be known as heavy metal, legendary Birmingham-bred Black Sabbath celebrate the 50th anniversary in 2020 of their multi-million selling album, Paranoid, with a 5LP/4CD edition, released on October 9, featuring the vinyl debut of two 1970 concerts.

Paranoid: Super Deluxe Edition includes the original album, in addition to a rare 1974 Quad Mix of the album folded down to stereo, plus two concerts from 1970, from Montreux and Brussels, that are pressed on vinyl for the first time. The five-LP set comes with a hardbound book with extensive liner notes featuring interviews with all four band members, rare photos, and memorabilia, a poster, as well as a replica of the tour book sold during the Paranoid tour.

After the success of the band's self-titled debut in early 1970, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward returned that fall with Paranoid. The record became the band's first album to top the UK charts and has sold more than 4 million copies in the US alone. Today, songs like "War Pigs," "Planet Caravan," "Iron Man," and of course, "Paranoid," continue to inspire a new generation of musicians around the world.

Paranoid: Super Deluxe Edition first two LPs feature the original album plus a Quadraphonic Mix of the album. Originally released on vinyl and 8-track cartridge in 1974, but subsequently long out of print, the Quad Mix has now been made available as a fold-down to stereo mix on vinyl for this set.

The collection's final three LPs mark the official vinyl debut of two 1970 live performances. The first was recorded on August 31 in Montreux, Switzerland shortly before the release of Paranoid. It captures the band, already a tight musical unit, thundering through new songs like "Hand Of Doom" and "Iron Man" while mixing in "N.I.B." and "Behind The Wall Of Sleep" from their debut album. The second concert was recorded a few months later in Brussels during the band's performance for Belgian television. Unofficial versions of this classic show have circulated in the past, but they've never sounded this good.

Former MACHINE HEAD guitarist Phil Demmel has once again said that playing with SLAYER "saved" his musical career.

Demmel filled in for SLAYER guitarist Gary Holt for four European shows in the fall of 2018 after Gary returned home to be with his dying father.

Phil, who had only played his last show with MACHINE HEAD the day prior to being asked to join SLAYER on the road, spoke about the experience of sharing the stage with one of his favorite bands during a brand new interview with "Drinks With Johnny", the Internet TV show hosted by AVENGED SEVENFOLD bassist Johnny Christ.

"I'm going from some serious esteem issues in my playing and my worth in the industry and just wondering where I am, and, 'Am I worthy to be in a band?', going from that to one of the biggest metal bands in the world and my heroes and the reason why I play this type of music saying, 'Hey, you're worthy. We want you to be here to take care of this spot,'" Demmel said (see video below). "Gary Holt's a hero of mine from 35 years in the Bay Area scene, watching this dude that's innovative filling some pretty big shoes.

"So I think that SLAYER experience saved my musical career, and maybe saved me as a person in some sense," Phil continued. "But it was cool, stepping into that band and helping out. I was part of their meet-and-greets, and they really welcomed me as not just kind of a fill-in but, 'You're part of SLAYER for this bit.' I had some great experiences with some real people.

"The two camps operate completely different. The MACHINE HEAD [is] totally pro, but this is just a different world that I was stepping into. And [SLAYER's support band] LAMB OF GOD's out there, and ANTHRAX is out there, and the OBITUARY guys are out there. I was just welcomed with open arms."

Holt began filling in for SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman at live shows in 2011, and became the band's full-time co-guitarist as of 2013, while remaining a member of EXODUS.

Demmel joined MACHINE HEAD a decade after his previous band, VIO-LENCE, broke up. VIO-LENCE also featured Robb Flynn, who went on to form MACHINE HEAD in 1992. Phil joined MACHINE HEAD in 2003.

Demmel announced in October 2018 that he would leave MACHINE HEAD at the end of the band's fall 2018 North American tour, explaining in a statement that it was "simply time" for him "to step away and do something else musically." Demmel has since relaunched VIO-LENCE and is currently working with that band on a new EP, to be released in early 2021.

ANVIL frontman Steve "Lips" Kudlow was a guest on a recent episode of the "Between Awesome And Disaster" podcast hosted by comedian Will Carey. Speaking about how he is dealing with the coronavirus crisis and what the touring circuit might look like post-pandemic, Lips said (hear audio below): "The outside world is upside down. You can't do anything without worrying about it. We're at the point where it's quite concerning in a certain sense. I've gotta see how it all turns out, but I think music and concerts are gonna be the last thing to come back, if they come back at all.

"There's a part of me that's saying, 'This virus is not gonna go away,'" he continued. "No, I don't see it. And all the closing down and everything that we've done, all we've done is prolonging what will inevitably happen. That's what I kind of think. I think in the long run, no one is get saved that they thought they were gonna save. I think anybody vulnerable to this is gonna eventually get it and die. I don't think that we're gonna ever really get it under control until everybody's had it and it's done its… Like the other pandemics that the world has had, I think it's gonna play itself out. I don't know if there's gonna be anything that we're gonna be able to do as a human race to fix it. I don't think so. And even if we do, there'll only be another one, and they'll come up with another reason to close down.

"I don't see the world ever really going back to the way it was, in a certain sense," Lips added. "It's not a good feeling. Then again, because I'm 64, it's not like I've got a long time to put up with it, that's for sure. [Laughs] It's gonna be everybody else's world that I leave behind. If I'm lucky, I've got 20 years left — maybe I might make it to 84, but who knows?

"I didn't retire from the music business; the music business retired from me.

"We're gonna see hockey and football and basketball — those things will come back long before they're gonna have a rock concert. That's what I think. Because I think people view sports as being more important than music. God only knows why, but that's how I see it. I think that the sports industry makes more money than the music industry."

ANVIL, a Toronto-based group, was formed in 1978 by childhood friends, Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner. Both came from Jewish families and had been playing music together since their teens. ANVIL is considered to have been an influence on many metal bands, including METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX.

Though initially a four-piece band, ANVIL's current lineup includes Kudlow, Reiner and bassist Chris Robertson.

ANVIL gained popularity and new fans since the 2008 theatrical documentary, "Anvil: The Story Of Anvil", which is currently available on Netflix.

ANVIL's latest album, "Legal At Last", was released in February via AFM Records. The disc was recorded at Soundlodge studios in Rhauderfehn in the northwest of Germany.

This past weekend, San Francisco Bay Area metallers MACHINE HEAD celebrated the 26th anniversary of their debut album, "Burn My Eyes".

Released worldwide on August 9, 1994, "Burn My Eyes" was and still is considered to be one of the most important albums of its genre, garnering the band an unprecedented level of recognition and spawning a myriad of imitators — all from just MACHINE HEAD's first record.

Last year, three-fourths of the "Burn My Eyes" lineup reunited to celebrate the LP's 25th anniversary. Joining guitarist/vocalist Robb Flynn and bassist Jared MacEachern were returning members Logan Mader (guitarist) and Chris Kontos (drums).

Earlier today, Flynn said in a statement: "26 years ago… crazy. That you still care about this record is humbling. This album changed my life in so many ways I can't even begin to explain.

"It was quite special to participate in the 25th anniversary alongside Chris, Logan and Jared. We put on a HELLUVA show for those who got to see it.

"It's crazy to think we would have been doing tour dates til the end of the year. The U.S. dates and EU dates we were fortunate enough to perform for you were nothing short of life-affirming.

"We shall see each other in the future, Head Cases. We love you all. Stay strong through the craziness!!"

Kontos added: "Yeah, one year after the 25th anniversary of 'Burn My Eyes', things could not be more different.

"It was amazing and an honor to be able to perform the 'Burn My Eyes' record in its entirety over the past year and a half with Robb, Logan and Jared. It was truly an experience I will never forget.

"Hopefully we can get back on the road and complete our 'Burn My Eyes' 25th mission at some point after the COVID-19 pandemic. Until then, please continue to enjoy 'Burn My Eyes' on its 26th anniversary.

"I have much gratitude that this record still means so much to many people around the world 26 years later.

"Until we meet again, much love and respect."

Mader said: "'Burn My Eyes' is already turning 26.... Damn, they grow up so fast!

"I am confident that we will complete the anniversary tour when the end of the world is over. For now, I'm heartbroken as we all wait.

"I miss my brothers in 'young MACHINE HEAD' and I miss my brothers in 'old MACHINE HEAD.' I miss the fans, I miss the amazing MACHINE HEAD crew, the freedom to travel and share adventures around the globe.

Added MacEachern: "Reflecting on an album like this is an emotionally poignant exercise on its own under any normal circumstance… but times are not normal. "It was such an honor and a privilege for us to share that rage with you, to let it wash over us all, and to be able to release it in a way that we ALL could feel together. Go back and listen. Let it spur us to action in our own lives, let it fuel the rage to overcome!"

Asked by Metal Hammer if it bothers him that some fans still regard "Burn My Eyes" as MACHINE HEAD's best album, Flynn said: "No. The clincher for me, and this rarely happens, is when someone says, 'You should write 'Burn My Eyes' again,' but it'd be so phony! I'm not 24, fuckin' running around on the streets. It was real and that's why it came out the way it did. If I tried to do it now, it wouldn't be real. Those times made me who I am and affected me forever and I'm fearless because of them, but I'd like to think that I've aged gracefully and I hope to continue to do that. How dumb would it be for some [50]-something dude to be acting like some teenage gangster? It'd be ridiculous."

Kontos left MACHINE HEAD before the release of the band's second album, 1997's "The More Things Change", and was replaced by Dave McClain.

McClain and guitarist Phil Demmel exited MACHINE HEAD in the fall of 2018.

Duce, who played bass on "Burn My Eyes", was fired from MACHINE HEAD in February 2013. He was replaced four months later by MacEachern. Adam later sued MACHINE HEAD, claiming that the other bandmembers "simply kicked him out of the band and presumed he would forget about over two decades of hard work, dedication, and effort" he put into the group. Duce also said his likeness was used on the band's web site and in promotions without his authorization. The lawsuit was settled out of court in July 2014.

Avantasia frontman / mastermind Tobias Sammet has checked in with a progress report:

"Cheers from my little electric wonderland. New Avantasia in the making. Sounds great, too many songs, it's hard to pick the right ones. Isolation does strange things to artists! Things goin' great, but it won't be finished this year. So many ideas, but I want every single line, every single word to be descriptive of what I envision it to be. I love the ride, and yet it's demanding! I still don't understand how people cannot pay attention to lyrics, it's the heart of every song and 50% of the magic. Fire desire flames burning higher... I mean, seriously????!"

Sammet checked in with the following status report on his other band, Edguy, back in May:

"Friends,

Some of you have been wondering about Edguy recently, and what I am up to next, when a new Avantasia album is due, etc. Well, who knows what’s gonna happen exactly these days and forthcoming months. First priority for all of us should be to be healthy and safe. That‘s all that counts right now! But you asked a couple of things, and I feel I have the time right now to set a few things straight:

I have been working on a new Avantasia record for a while now, and not on a new Edguy record because that’s what feels right to me. It’s a compliment whenever I write an album for Edguy people ask for Avantasia and vice versa. But as an artist you have a feeling about what you want to, what you’re driven to do next, that inner longing is your fuel and drive, and anyone who has recently written a couple of heartfelt albums will agree with me. Ideas have to be done a certain way, and in my case if there wasn’t Avantasia, I’d have to invent it.

Sascha (Paeth) and I have started working on great ideas some time ago, and for me in art there is my way or no way, and I owe you and me that honest self determination.

Edguy has been on hiatus for a while as you all realized. Yes, it’s been a while since we were out, and nothing is in the pipeline currently but we‘re all doing our own stuff, at least up until this mean virus stopped big parts of everyday life all over the world.

The situation is, Space Police was a great album, but it felt extremely exhausting to put together and make it the great album that I was satisfied with. It‘s not unusual I assume, nearly three decades in a band, when you deliver like a clockwork, bands should be granted to run out of mutual agreement and then take a break as opposed to delivering something for the sake of putting their logo on something.

Besides, I can‘t split myself in two. Edguy has always been my love, and in early 1999 I started my second love - Avantasia. You know, I also have ideas for a solo project I so desperately would love to do, but I don't wanna get lost in too many things at once. Besides, being 42, having written 18 albums, being a family father and a prisoner in isolation (currently, no fishing for sympathy here, we all are) - I just don‘t want to continue to deliver like a machine according to expectations. It‘s impossible.

So, when is the new Avantasia album ready? I have no idea! Who knows what the future holds, I will continue to work on my stuff and then see what comes out, and when.

I wish you all strength and hope and light in these troubled times, I am fully aware there are more important things in life than the question about which of his two bands a musician is going to release an album with. It‘s completely unimportant in the big picture, looking at what the world is going through right now, so let‘s not take little things too seriously. But you asked and I wanted to answer instead of reading and responding to individual comments. It‘s easier that way.

Scott Ian says that ANTHRAX has "a lot of material" written for its next studio album.

The follow-up to 2016's "For All Kings" will be ANTHRAX's third full-length release since the 2010 return of singer Joey Belladonna, who came back into the fold for the "Big Four" shows with METALLICA, SLAYER and MEGADETH, in the process helping inspire a new wave of creativity.

In a brand new interview with Syfy Wire's "Metal Crush", Ian stated about the progress of the ANTHRAX songwriting sessions (see video below): "We had already started working on stuff with the intent of finishing it up in the springtime of this year, of '20, and then maybe getting in the studio and either having a record out later this year or early '21. But obviously all those plans have now changed [in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic]. We have still been working on stuff through the magic of the Internet. We can do a lot over Zoom and FaceTime, sending music back and forth through e-mail and all that. But we need to really get in the room and work on the arrangements and really play something, like, 30 times until you really understand it and feel like, 'Okay, this is what this arrangement needs to be.' But that's kind of the holdup at this point. But we certainly have a lot of material, which makes me very excited about when we can actually get in a room together and [work on stuff]."

At last year's Download festival in the United Kingdom, drummer Charlie Benante said fans can expect to hear some surprises on ANTHRAX's next disc. "There's some extreme stuff on this record that we touched on," he said. "There's different things that we're gonna try and do that's gonna make it next level."

Earlier last year, Benante told Australia's "Everblack" podcast that ANTHRAX's new music is shaping up to be "a little more in the aggressive style."

"For All Kings" was called by some critics ANTHRAX's strongest album to date. Its arrival followed a five-year period during which the band experienced a rebirth of sorts, beginning with ANTHRAX's inclusion on the "Big Four" tour, and continuing with the 2011 release of comeback LP "Worship Music".

DEATH ANGEL's Ted Aguilar (rhythm guitar) has joined forces with WARBRINGER's Carlos Cruz (drums), HOLY GRAIL's Alex Lee (lead guitar), and HELLFIRE's Herman Balanda (bass) to record a quarantine cover version of METALLICA's "Orion". Video of the performance can be seen below.

Aguilar said in a statement: "A METALLICA favorite that just has to be played! And so we did!"

METALLICA's Kirk Hammett famously produced DEATH ANGEL's first demo, 1985's "Kill As One".

In recent years, Hammett has joined DEATH ANGEL on stage to perform the the METALLICA song "Trapped Under Ice" and the BLACK SABBATH classic "Heaven And Hell".

Back in 2018, DEATH ANGEL singer Mark Osegueda told RadioactiveMike Z about how his band ended up getting Hammett to work on "Kill As One": "[Kirk] took us under his wing when we were very, very young, prior to being signed. We would give him tapes of new songs. We'd see him at Ruthie's Inn or any of those local clubs and we'd give him cassette tapes of new stuff we'd written. It was literally in our rehearsal room. So what we'd do is we'd get our tape recorded or boom box, hit 'Play' and 'Record', stick it in a carboard box and throw a jacket over it and put it in the middle of the room, and that's how we'd record these new songs. And I'd give 'em to Kirk when I'd see him at these shows, just hoping he'd listen. Next time I'd see him at a club, he [would be like], 'Hey, I really dug that new song you wrote.' And eventually he approached us and was, like, 'I'd really be interested in producing a demo for you guys.' How are you gonna say no to that? So it was brilliant. We recorded that up in Glen Ellen, California, which is up in the Wine Country. We went up to the studio there, and over weekends, when we weren't at school, we would go up there and stay at the studio and just record on the weekends. And we did that for about three weeks — three or four weeks even — and it worked out great. And eventually, that's the demo that got us signed to Enigma that released our first two records."

DEATH ANGEL guitarist Rob Cavestany told Metal Refuge that working with Hammett was a "totally inspiring" experience, "because at that point in time, 'Ride The Lightning' had just come out, and so we were just freaking out that we were going to be doing this demo with the guitar player who was on 'Ride The Lightning', for God's sake! Basically, we were already kind of somewhat friends anyway, from just around the scene here and there. This was before METALLICA was untouchable. At that point in time, they were actually our local mentors in the scene, and we had just done some shows, either we were just about to do the shows, or we just did a couple shows with METALLICA at this place called the Kabuki nightclub in San Francisco. It was actually METALLICA, ARMORED SAINT and DEATH ANGEL. It was a great time. Kirk came in and basically just brought his experience to the recording studio with us, and also took his vibe and energetic and enthusiastic way that he was. It was just extremely thrilling for us at the time."

Guitarist Niclas Engelin, who has been sitting out IN FLAMES' tour dates for the past year and a half, was asked in a new interview with the "MetalBreak" podcast what his "future" with the band is. He responded (hear audio below), "I choose to pass on that [question]," before quickly adding, "I'm still in the band."

Engelin's replacement for IN FLAMES' live shows for most of 2019 and early 2020 has been former MEGADETH and current ACT OF DEFIANCE guitarist Chris Broderick.

Engelin is not listed as a member of IN FLAMES on the band's Facebook page (Broderick is), and he is not featured in any of IN FLAMES' current promotional photos from the group's record label, Nuclear Blast.

Back in April 2019, IN FLAMES singer Anders Fridén told Sticks For Stones that Broderick was doing a "great" job filling in for Engelin.

"We've known [Chris] for 17 years," Anders said. "He was in a band called JAG PANZER, and they opened up for us back then, so we've been friends since. And when Niclas called us, like 48 hours before we had to leave, and he went to the hospital — he had to. So we didn't wanna cancel. Our music is made for two guitars, and we didn't wanna have one guitar playing and everything else on a backing track — we wanted to have someone playing it. We happily found out that Chris was free and he came out and we had a couple of days' rehearsal in Austin before the tour started in Houston. And, yeah, it's going great. We've known him, as I said, for a long time, so we knew it would work on a social level. And [his] guitar [playing] is obviously phenomenal."

Engelin is currently involved with a band called WE SELL THE DEAD, which released its sophomore album, "Black Sleep", in February via earMUSIC.

Floridian thrashers Intoxicated have unveiled their new video "Walled". The track hails from the band's new EP, Walled, set for international release on August 28th via Seeing Red Records.

The history of Florida's Intoxicated dates back to the early '90s. Throughout the early-to-mid '90s, the band released four demos, one of which, the Drain EP, was recorded and produced by their friend Chuck Schuldiner and also featured Trevor Peres.

When Obituary went on hiatus for all those years, Donald Tardy actually joined Intoxicated and played with the band for nearly four years. During that time, Andrew WK, being a huge Obituary fan, approached Donald to be in his band. As it turned out, since Donald was jamming with the Intoxicated boys at the time, Andrew WK hired all of the Intoxicated members to be his backing band, which is also why Intoxicated has taken a giant backseat for all these years.

What's even more interesting is that Erik Payne, the vocalist and guitarist of the band, is brother to Tim Payne of Team Pain! Tim and Team Payne were the architects behind the infamous Animal Chin skate ramp and are the most famous skatepark-building team in the world, having worked on nearly everything you could imagine - Jackass, X-Games, the list is endless.

While the band's roots are firmly planted in the death / thrash roots of their Florida brethren, Intoxicated have expanded their sonic palette to incorporate more crossover and hardcore influences, as well. Swedish prog-power band, Tad Morose, led by guitarist Christer Andersson, are back in the studio working on a new album. Stay tuned for updates on their progress. They have also issued a reminder that the band's last album, Chapter X, will be released on vinyl LP on August 21st. Order information will be available soon.

Chapter X was released via GMR Music in 2018. The Bollnäs-based outfit followed the release of 2015's St. Demonius with a successful European headline tour as well as making the rounds on the festival circuit, before launching into the early stages of writing the material that now comprises Chapter X. Ronny Hemlin reflects, "This is still fun for us! The past few years - as always with these guys - was filled with lots of touring, playing clubs, both big and small and destroying festivals of various calibers. You could say we spent that time gaining new fans. Or, as we like to call it, 'collecting souls.'"

 

 

Feeling no need to rush the recording process, the band entered Studio Claustrophobic, which is owned by Tad Morose frontman Ronny Hemlin and Johan Lofgren, formerly of Steel Attack, working at a comfortable steady pace. Mastering of Chapter X was handled by Jonas Kjellgren at Black Lounge Studios and the band turned to an old friend, Mr. Rainer Kalwitz (A Mended Rhyme) to take care of the album's artwork.

Finnish cello rockers APOCALYPTICA have collaborated with HALESTORM frontwoman Lzzy Hale on their new single, "Talk To Me". The track will be released digitally on Friday, August 21.

APOCALYPTICA's latest studio album, "Cell-0", came out in January. The effort was the band's first fully instrumental record in 17 years.

2015's "Shadowmaker" was APOCALYPTICA's first album to feature just one singer — former SCARS ON BROADWAY guitarist Franky Perez — instead of guest collaborators. The disc was recorded with Grammy Award-winning producer Nick Raskulinecz (FOO FIGHTERS, DEFTONES, MASTODON).

Prior to enlisting Perez, APOCALYPTICA released eight albums that melded the classically trained cello mastery of the three core bandmembers with the harder elements of the rock world, including drums and guest vocalists, such as Gavin Rossdale from BUSH, and Corey Taylor of SLIPKNOT and STONE SOUR fame.

Back in 2018, APOCALYPTICA's Eicca Toppinen stated about the band's decision to make an all-instrumental album at this point in the group's career: "On the previous ones, we always combined the instrumental songs with the vocal songs, and it was great to have the featuring artists, it was great to work with Frank Perez for the 'Shadowmaker' album. But then, on the other hand, it became a bigger interest for us, like, okay, it would be interesting to make a full instrumental album, so there's no compromise with anything."

In the shadow of the coronavirus and a lull in touring, a supergroup of top musicians assembled to record new music that reflects the angst, isolation, and explosive energy of these strange times. The project is called BAD PENNY, and it features former JOURNEY lead singer Steve Augeri, current QUEENSRŸCHE frontman Todd La Torre, QUEEN's former bassist (and BLUE ÖYSTER CULT member) Danny Miranda, BLUE ÖYSTER CULT drummer Jules Radino, and guitarist/project mastermind Mike Holtzman.

BAD PENNY's first track, the heavy rocker "Voices In My Head", sung by La Torre, captures the mood of the country. "The country is kind of going nuts," Holtzman laughs. "We are social people, trapped indoors. We face uncertainty about the future. This song reflects that anxiety and the bottled energy we are all feeling."

BLUE ÖYSTER CULT's legendary rhythm section of Miranda and Radino bring the groove, and of course, more cowbell.

New York metro rock radio station 102.3 WBAB is hosting a Facebook Live listening event for the debut of "Voices In My Head" on August 24 at 8 p.m. EST. Check it out, along with an interview with the band, on BAD PENNY's Facebook page.

A follow-up song, a ballad called "Lose Myself", sung by Augeri, drops September 1, along with a video shot by Foad Farid (Lady Gaga's "Marry The Night").

IRON MAIDEN's Adrian Smith has commented on the passing of producer Martin Birch, expressing his shock and calling it "very sad."

The guitarist, who worked with Birch for almost a decade during his initial tenure in IRON MAIDEN in the 1980s, made the comments while speaking to Eonmusic about his book "Monsters Of River & Rock", which is due on September 3 via Virgin Books.

Birch, who passed away on August 9, was perhaps best known for his 11-year stint with MAIDEN, serving as the producer and engineer of such classic albums as "Killers", "The Number Of The Beast", "Piece Of Mind" and "Somewhere In Time".

Adrian said: "Well, firstly, it was very sad when he passed away. I was shocked, really, I mean, he was quite young still. He was only 71."

The guitarist went on to recall his first encounter with Martin, with whom he first worked with during the 1981 "Killers" session. He said: "Martin obviously did a lot of great bands; before us, he did [DEEP] PURPLE and [BLACK] SABBATH. He was great, but he was a bit intimidating at first, because he had this big reputation."

Adrian continued: "I'd never been in the studio to do a proper album before. I mean, I could hardly eat in the week leading up to going in the studio. But he had an air of authority about him because of his reputation."

Smith also discussed Birch's martial arts prowess, which, he said, the producer would demonstrate at the most inopportune moments. "He also — as he reminded us on many occasions — he was a karate black belt, and there's a few stories about that in the book. If he had a few drinks after a [recording] session, he'd start doing his karate routine and practicing his kicks and his chops in the studio. You'd see all the roadies scurrying around, moving the guitars out of the way in case he kicked the headstock off a vintage Les Paul or something."

Eonmusic's interview with Smith, where he chats about "Monsters Of River & Rock", songwriting, studio sessions, "Somewhere In Time", A.S.A.P. and more, will be available from Tuesday, August 18.

The day after Birch's death, MAIDEN bassist and founder Steve Harris said about the producer: "He was just absolutely brilliant. He wasn't just a producer, he was a hands-on engineer too, so he knew how to get a great sound. He was also fantastic at motivating people; he just had a knack of getting the best out of you. He was also a really nice man, great fun with a terrific sense of humor and that made him easy to work with. We all got along with him really well and the whole band is very saddened by today's news."

Added singer Bruce Dickinson: "To me, Martin was a mentor who completely transformed my singing: he was a psychotherapist and, in his own words, a juggler who could mirror exactly what a band was. That was his special talent as a producer. He was not a puppeteer, he did not manipulate the sound of the band, he just reflected it in the best possible way. Apart from all of that, he was a wonderful, warm and funny human being.

"Martin and I shared a passion for martial arts — he for karate and me for fencing which gave us another bond too.

"I'm so very sad to hear this news. It's incredible that he has passed away at such a young age for a man who was so full of life."

MAIDEN manager Rod Smallwood said: "He was a fantastic guy who always shared a mutual respect with the band. He never, ever, let us down in the studio. He was a true gentleman and he will be hugely missed by everyone in the MAIDEN family."

Birch, who began his career in the late 1960s as an engineer, also worked on recordings for DEEP PURPLE ("In Rock", "Machine Head"), RAINBOW ("Rising", "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll"), WHITESNAKE ("Saints & Sinners") and BLACK SABBATH ("Heaven And Hell", "Mob Rules"). He retired in 1992.

Speaking with Classic Rock about "The Number Of The Beast", Birch said: "I had the same feeling on 'The Number Of The Beast' as when we did DEEP PURPLE's 'Machine Head'. It was the same kind of atmosphere, the same kind of feeling, like, something really good is happening here.

"I remember we spent ages getting the vocal intro to the title track right. We did it over and over and over until Bruce Dickinson said, 'My head is splitting. Can't we move on and do something else and come back to this?' But I wouldn't let him do anything else until he'd got it perfect. It drove him crazy."

On March 14, 2020, MANOWAR played its long-awaited first-ever concert in Mexico, headlining the Hell & Heaven Metal Fest in Mexico City. This historic event was recorded in highest definition, with over 15 8K and 4K cameras, a drone and immersive audio setup. The resulting footage will soon be released on Blu-ray, DVD and digital platforms under the title "The Final Battle". The first trailer for the set is available below.

MANOWAR released a new EP, "The Final Battle I", in March 2019. Parts II and III of the trilogy will arrive at a later date, inspired by MANOWAR's adventures on the remainder of "The Final Battle".

Last year, MANOWAR recruited Anders Johansson as the band's new drummer.

The Swedish musician made his live debut with MANOWAR in March 2019 in Brno, Czech Republic.

Johansson can be heard on "The Final Battle I", which was initially made available in an exclusive pre-sale at the merchandise booth of the band's "The Final Battle" world tour.

Former MANOWAR guitarist Karl Logan was arrested in August 2018 in Charlotte, North Carolina and charged with six counts of third-degree exploitation of a minor. He was jailed after pleading guilty to two child-pornography counts.

A few days after Karl's arrest was made public, MANOWAR issued a statement saying that he would no longer perform with the group. He has since been replaced by E.V. Martel, who previously played in a MANOWAR tribute band.

Thrash metal legends SLAYER have once again partnered with designer toy and apparel company Super7 to create the "Live Undead" three-pack set. Inspired by the band's 1984 "live" EP, it features the undead band members as 3.75-inch ReAction figures with the bleeding headstone right out of the record's cover art. The set comes with two guitar accessories packaged in a graveyard window box.

The "Live Undead" three-pack will be made available this Wednesday, August 19.

Canadian singer, songwriter and producer Devin Townsend will release "Order Of Magnitude - Empath Live Volume 1" on October 23, a document of his winter 2019 European tour that saw him taking on possibly his most ambitious live show to date.

Recorded in December 2019 in London, U.K. on the penultimate night of the tour in support of his latest album "Empath", this run of shows saw Devin joined by an incredible lineup of musicians. The band was made up of guitarists Mike Kenneally (ex-FRANK ZAPPA) and Markus Reuter (STICK MEN, THE CRIMSON PROJECT), drummer Morgen Agren (KAIPA, MATS & MORGAN, FRANK ZAPPA), bassist Nathan Navarro, HAKEN keyboard player Diego Tejeida, and guitarist/vocalist Ché Aimee Dorval, as well as vocalists Samantha and Anne Preis and Arabella Packford.

Devin's plan for the "Empath" touring cycle was to divide it up into three "Volumes," and this was Volume 1. The idea behind the shows was a simple one: none of the backing tapes or click tracks that had long been necessary to bring the kaleidoscopic cacophony in his head and on his records to life in the flesh. This would just be Townsend and a band of genius-level musicians getting up there and trying to keep it from spinning off into outer space. Or maybe just letting it spin off into outer space for the sheer hell of it.

"The whole objective was that I wanted to make that statement: This is by the seat our pants," he says. "Because it's important to me to represent this hyper anal-retentive music that I've made over the years, but in a human way. Rather than it just being, 'Well, here it is, perfectly done.'

"I was overwhelmed by the fact that all these brilliant people that I have so much respect for were willing to come together and play this weird shit with me," says Devin. "I had these unique players and this interesting instrumentation that allowed us to interpret the music in different ways. It was clear to me that I could just have fun and be me and know that they would be effortlessly be able to follow that."

That sense of fun and freedom was evident to anyone who was there on the night. Visually, it was an assault on the senses in the best possible way. A digital screen projected vivid images throughout the show. A giant gleaming mirrorball hung from the ceiling. There were multiple costume changes and a tiki bar onstage (a tiki bar!).

"Order Of Magnitude - Empath Live Volume 1" will be released as a limited deluxe 2CD+Blu-ray+DVD artbook (including expanded artwork and photos), limited 2CD+DVD digipak, standalone Blu-ray, gatefold 3LP+2CD vinyl box-set and as a digital Album. The Blu-ray disc includes a bonus behind-the-scenes documentary, and both DVD and Blu-ray feature a 5.1 Surround Sound mix.

In June, "Empath – The Ultimate Edition" was released, the definitive version of Devin's latest studio album. (De)Tour brought together the brightest stars of the music world in order to combat widespread tour cancelations and continued financial uncertainty faced by thousands of music industry professionals.

Formed in the days following the shutdown, NIVA works to preserve and nurture the ecosystem of independent live music venues and promoters throughout the United States. Independent venues exist in every state across the country. They were the first to close, have zero revenue, enormous overhead, and there’s no view into when they can reopen. When surveyed, 90% of NIVA members reported that if the shutdown lasts six months or longer and there’s no federal assistance, they will be forced to shutter forever. To enable their 2,500 members' survival, NIVA is advocating for the passage of the bipartisan Save Our Stages Act and RESTART Act. Kimmo: "I did not need to think twice when Jonne (vocalist) asked me if I would like to make a documentary about the Korpiklaani’s extensive Russia/Siberia tour. I knew instantly this would be a one of kind trip. I have travelled the world extensively making films but this journey was completely different from anything else I have experienced. Due to the relentless schedules, all the time on the road on planes, trains and automobiles forced me to re-think the film equipment and filming techniques. This turned out to be great gamble that paid off royally as the look and style to the documentary ended up like something you never seen before."

Tuomas Rounakari (violinist): "During the live shows Kimmo blended in with the crowd and was almost un-noticable with his gimbal camera setup. He was able to really deliver the real live show feeling of the packed clubs. When I look at these documentaries they really have captured the essence of the journeys, audiences and the band on stage."

Kimmo: "The latest development in camera technology has really taken away a lot the limitations of film making. Now I can do things I was dreaming about 10 years ago!"

Tuomas: "The Russian tour allowed me to visit exceptional places for the first time. I had dreamt of visiting Lake Baikal for decades because of its unique nature and strong shamanism that is still alive among the indigenous peoples. While I was dreaming of seeing these places, our fans had been dreaming of seeing us live. So this tour was full of win-win situations, different dreams coming true. I am very grateful for our fans, who at the end, made this trip possible."

Kuusniemi, himself of heavy metal fame and known as "The Godfather of Finnish Heavy Metal, is a filmmaker by trade. Packing his equipment he set out with Korpiklaani – on an amazing road trip all over Russia. The result was unforeseen footage of Russian heavy metal fandom and the wonders of this huge country of diverse cultures.

Tuomas: "In Khabarovsk, we (me and Kimmo) wanted to visit the Amur river and the Nanai tribe people. I posted this wish on Facebook and that's how one of our fans, Boris, contacted us and arranged everything. It would have been very difficult to do this without local help."

Kimmo: "Meeting the Nanai people was one of the many highlights of the journey through Siberia. Travelling through Siberian landscapes on a skidoo in -30 C, hearing the stories about the ancient petroglyphs by the frozen Amur river, eating frozen raw fish with vodka and trying at the same time to film as much as possible before the cameras froze over was an unforgettable experience."

Arch Enemy vocalist Alissa White-Gluz has checked in with the following update:

"I’m so incredibly proud to share the project that has kept me bubbling with ideas and not sleeping for the past couple weeks - 'Lizzie'! Now, on both Charlotte Wessels and my own Patreon pages, we shared the music video for our song 'Lizzie', which is actually a three-way, all-woman collaboration with the deceased artist, Elizabeth Siddal.

Doing this kind of thing on top of our main bands is an incredible amount of work, but so rewarding! It is made possible by the support of our patrons (my Beastlings!). So - in return, the members of my Fan Club and Charlotte’s page get all sorts of perks and today they get the whole song, the whole music video and even isolated stems so they can remix the song or sing and play along with us.

Japanese drum prodigy Yoyoka, who has become a YouTube sensation and has attracted the attention of KISS icon Gene Simmons and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl. She has posted a brand new cover of the Rush classic "YYZ" with the following message:

"My name is Yoyoka, I'm a 10 year old drummer from Japan. I have a lot of respect for Neil Peart. I am sorry he has gone to heaven, but I would like to dedicate a cover of this wonderful song to him. R.I.P."

Swedish prog-power band Tad Morose's record company, GMR Music, has issued the following update:

"On August 21, we are releasing the Tad Morose album Chapter X on a nice Gatefold - 2LP Vinyl. It will also come as a limited edition 100 copies each on two different colours: red and gold / brown. You can pre-order your copy in our webstore here."

The Bollnas based outfit followed the release of 2015's St. Demonius with a successful European headline tour as well as making the rounds on the festival circuit, before launching into the early stages of writing the material that now comprises Chapter X. Ronny Hemlin reflects, ”This is still fun for us! The past few years - as always with these guys - was filled with lots of touring, playing clubs, both big and small and destroying festivals of various calibers. You could say we spent that time gaining new fans. Or, as we like to call it, 'collecting souls.'"

Feeling no need to rush the recording process, the band entered Studio Claustrophobic, which is owned by Tad Morose frontman Ronny Hemlin and Johan Lofgren, formerly of Steel Attack, working at a comfortable steady pace. Mastering of Chapter X was handled by Jonas Kjellgren at Black Lounge Studios and the band turned to an old friend, Mr. Rainer Kalwitz (A Mended Rhyme) to take care of the album's artwork. The Spring of 2018 then saw the band sign their new deal with GMR.

Leaves' Eyes have released their new single and video "Dark Love Empress", the first track from their upcoming album The Last Viking, which is due for release on October 23rd via AFM Records.

England in the year 1066. The decisive battle near Stamford Bridge. Warriors fighting death, the grounds soaked in blood. Norway’s king Harald III, called Hardrada ("the hard ruler") lies dying. His whole life flashes before his eyes: cruel wars, fights over power, journeys to exotic worlds guiding to powerful women, emperors and kings falling into ruin. The last Viking King is dead - the Vikings’ age is over. Long live the Vikings.

The Last Viking is the 2020-monumental-piece from Leaves' Eyes. The setting of the symphonic metal masterpiece couldn’t be more tremendous. With their cult-albums Vinland Saga (2005) and King Of Kings (2015) they already turned Leif Erikssons discovery of America and the life of Norway’s first king into music. Now, Leaves' Eyes bring the Viking Sagas to their bombastic finale.

The album was produced by Alexander Krull at Mastersound Studio. The cover is an artwork masterpiece created by Stefan Heilemann, which perfectly fits to the collection of top-class Leaves' Eyes covers so far.
